Not just book chat! The Literary Life Podcast is an ongoing conversation about the skill and art of reading well and the lost intellectual tradition needed to fully enter into the great works of literature. Experienced teachers Angelina Stanford and Thomas Banks (of www.HouseOfHumaneLetters.com) join lifelong reader Cindy Rollins (of www.MorningtimeForMoms.com) for slow reads of classic literature, conversations with book lovers, and an ever-unfolding discussion of how Stories Will Save the World. And check out our sister podcast The Well Read Poem with poet Thomas Banks.

Brilliant work

The people at LitLife will hold your hand and gently walk you through literature if that is what you need, while also providing robust, thoughtful, informed ideas for those who crave that. It is a rare gift to be able to do both with such wisdom, grace, and humour.
I am not a podcast person, and this and their poetry podcast are the only podcasts I listen to with any kind of regularity. Subscribe. They will not waste your time.

delightful interlude
Revisado: 12-16-20
The readings are rich and clear. there isn't really any instruction on how to listen to poetry, just good poetry to listen to. beautiful words, beautifully read.
selections vary wildly, from Edward Lear's comical Tortoise and the Kangaroo to Shakespeare.
I do wish there was a list of poems and poets and chapter divisions between poems to make it easier to go to a specific poem when one wishes to listen again.

Historia
Viva Durant, New Orleans’ youngest detective, is on a quest to solve a jazzy mystery. Every summer, Viva heads to New Orleans to spend time with her loving but stern Grandmother, known as Gram. After Gram reads Viva an article in the local paper about a missing treasure related to the world-famous song, “Miss Mary Mack”, Viva heads through the Crescent City on an epic adventure to track down the treasure. The clues lead Viva to the French Quarter, a jazz club, a creepy cemetery, and even the circus.

Please, please, will this author write more?!
Revisado: 01-18-20
This was just a delightful story about a delightful kid doing interesting, intriguing things while visiting her grandmother in New Orleans.
I think this is only available as an audio book, and that is the only way I imagine it working, as Vera sings through some of the clues. I will be looking for other kids' stories by this writer, though. I thoroughly enjoyed her characters and her story. It also fills a much needed gap on the juvenile fiction shelves, avwell written, engaging story featuring interesting, real, likable characters who happen also to be black and who just live their lives and do their thing without dragging in social issues by the ears and beating kids about the head and shoulders with the Right Morals.
This particularly story is for kids into the Nancy Drew, Three Cousins Detectives, Alfred Hitcock's Three Investigators genre. Readers from about grades 4 or 5 to middle school would enjoy it (I'm a grown granny and I enjoyed it).
There are no murders or dark, scary elements.
Vera is 14, and a good kid, a successful student who enjoys playing her saxophone, and loves jazz. She lives in California but is spending the summer with her grandmother in New Orleans. She expects to be bored because, although she loves her grandmother, Grandma isn't exactly a 'fun' sort of person. Vera stumbles across a historical mystery she decides to unravel. As she follows the clues she also learns a few interesting things about New Orleans history and research, but none of this educational stuff is heavy handed or obviously included as HERE IS A LESSON, CHILD, LEARN SOMETHING. I wouldn't say this is a book to learn about New Orleans, but it might be a book that will get a kid curious to learn more about it, or a kid might just enjoy the tale, which is fine. The 'educational bits' are light and just part of the normal progress of Vera's research and attempts to track down the answers to her mystery. She also gets to know her grandmother a little better and is able to laugh at her quirks while still appreciating her for who she really is.
It's a kids' mystery, so some of the clues are a bit improbable, too easy to solve, resolutions to a couple difficult predicaments she gets into come a little easier than seems realistic, but these are minor quibbles and would apply to pretty much any mystery involving kid detectives. It's one of the best in the juvenile mystery genre category, IMO. Very fun, light reading.
So to Ms. Ahshli St. Armant- please write more. I'd love to see Viva Durant become the next Nancy Drew, only better.

The performers were terrific.
Revisado: 01-05-20
The story is NOT Barrie's Peter Pan and I don't like the dishonesty about that. The writing is stilted at times, often so anachronistic as to sound totally fake. I would probably have found this much less irritating if I had not been expecting Barrie's Peter Pan and been given some imposter's version instead. It would not have been hard to just advertise it as a more modern, updated rendition based on Barrie's characters and story, and then you would not have had reviews influenced by disappointed expectations.

A.A.Milne is five stars for his wonderful characters and sense of humour.
Peter Dennis is good. However the intermittent Piglet snorts are very unpleasant and distracting.
Ch 7 is incomplete, and cuts off mid-sentence.

Second, when telling such lies as may seem necessary to your international standing, do not tell the lies to the people who know the truth. Do not tell the Eskimos that snow is bright green; nor tell the negroes in Africa that the sun never shines in that Dark Continent. Rather tell the Eskimos that the sun never shines in Africa; and then, turning to the tropical Africans, see if they will believe that snow is green. Similarly, the course indicated for you is to slander the Russians to the English and the English to the Russians.

Revisado: 01-04-20
If you want to understand the mindset of the pro war, anti German Britisher in the midst of WW1, this is a five star read. If you want the best of Chesterton, it's probably one star. There are still some gems, but most readers will be happier using their time on something else.

I loved this so much. Warm, witty, tender, happy, hard, tearful. All of it. I cried. I got goosebumps. And it's 'just' a story of a black family with good times and bad times, brilliantly told by their daughter all grown up.

Historia
One of Heinlein's best-loved works, The Rolling Stones follows the rollicking adventures of the Stone family as they tour the solar system. It doesn't seem likely for twins to have the same middle name. Even so, it's clear that Castor and Pollux Stone both have "Trouble" written in that spot on their birth certificates. Of course, anyone who's met their grandmother Hazel would know they came by it honestly.

Family friendly, rollicking space adventure. A bit dated but still essentially timeless in philosophy.
Stone family take a space ship on a 2 yr trip and the twin boys learn a lot about responsibility, planning ahead, consequences, fair trading practices and sharp dealing. other member of the family include parents, grandma, a sister and a little brother.
