An interesting world, carefully constructed. But...
Revisado: 02-25-25
Three times I put this book down, not intending to finish it, feeling bored by unnecessary episodes that didn't add much: repetitive reaffirming who a character is, without adding anything new or interesting. Similar onflicts among the protagonists happened over and over, often without either character learning anything new from the current episode, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ me neither. Still, there was a lot to like, and I'll probably come back for the next book

They made AI real. And made AI's future pretty clear and plausibly optimistic

I like how they compare AI's impact to the Interstate Highway project and on Great Britain's response to the Luddites. Cautious optimism.

What's happened to you, Mr Scalzi? I've enjoyed every one of your books up to now, I liked this one the least.
Revisado: 09-30-24
The world that you developed was far-fetched and uncomfortable. Not one of the characters was someone to like or respect. The characters' evolutions had no clear trajectory, and all the players were one-dimensional. The plot twists were so random that I suspect you were desperate to contrive something to keep interesting. My guess is that this was the start of some longer book. If so, I can see why you got bored with it, and punched out. What I don't see is, why did you foist this on your loyal listeners?

Revisado: 08-16-24
I like the character development, though I had a hard time tracking all the names. I like the surprises: I guessed 100% wrong every time, and it always seems more plausible than my guess. I'll totally get the rest of the volumes as they come out. These authors are space-opera-composers, and I'm in line for that unobstructed balcony seat

Historia
Dr. Tyson Klein is a quantum physicist who has dedicated his entire life to his research. At CERN, he analyses data generated by the Large Hadron Collider, the world's biggest and most powerful particle accelerator. Now, Ty believes he's found a pattern in its output. It looks like an organised data stream, being broadcast over what he calls a quantum radio. Could it be a signal from another universe? A message sent from the future? Or something else entirely?

Historia
Lost in time, the town of Black Creek, Kentucky becomes home to temporal layers of people, creatures, and monsters from disparate eras. Journey beyond the time of humanity and witness the rewriting of mankind’s genesis. For Owen McCoy, a typical day on the job as head of security for Synergy, a research company conducting mysterious experiments, is boring at best. And that’s the way he likes it. Patrolling the Appalachian mountainside, where his now deceased father taught him how to hunt, is relaxing and connects him to the past.

Revisado: 02-10-24
This book is choc-a-block work violence, as the protag, former marine and current security guard for a company doing insane stuff like time travel, resulting in multiple versions of some of the characters, and other weird stuff. all in aid of saving the company's founder's wife from cancer. Strange. But the action is good. Don't know that I'll read it again, but not bag

Historia
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

drags, then doesn't (spoiler alert)
Revisado: 11-09-23
First, R. C. Bray was - for me - typecast as Joe Bishop in the Expeditionary Force series. THat's another first-person book, with similar enough writing style that took me several hours to be able to hold on to William, not Joe.
The premises of what goes wrong in the mission, and, how Will acquires infinite re-spawning, are pretty hard to believe. but Robinson does a good enough job to keep it intermittently exciting enough, by throwing another far-fetched curve ball, about the time I'm ready to give up. I doubt I'll either read it again or buy more from the 13(!) books so far in the series.

Historia
Tristan Lyons, Mel Stokes, and their fellow outcasts from the Department of Diachronic Operations (D.O.D.O.) fight to stop the powerful Irish witch Gráinne from using time travel to reverse the evolution of all modern technology. Chief amongst Gráinne’s plots: to encrypt cataclysmic spells into Shakespeare’s “cursed” play, Macbeth. When her fellow rogue agents fall victim to Gráinne’s schemes, Melisande Stokes is forced to send Tristan’s untested, wayward sister Robin back in time to 1606 London.

awful format, boring dialog & melodrama acting
Revisado: 10-29-23
I was excited when I saw this book. What a disappointment!
The "cast" is totally over-acting. The book takes forever to get anywhere. Many of the actors whined their lines. I went ahead a few chapters and the ridiculous format apparently continues. Ick. I hope I'm not too late to return it
