A horror story told in beautiful language
Revisado: 08-06-24
All too real horror of modern totalitarianism told in the story of a single family torn asunder. The language is strikingly beautiful. It is a worthy Booker Prize winner.

Brilliant story with an intricate plot that all weaves together in the end. The narrator is fantastic. This is, among 700 Audible books I own, easily in the top 10.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Remarkably Wonderful
Revisado: 04-13-23
What a joyful story. I’ve listened to Audible for hours daily, going on thirteen years now, so I go through a lot of books. This one is top shelf.
Listening to this reminded me of the happiness I felt listening to “The Nix”, or “Nothing to See Here”. It’s that type of story that wraps itself around you. I was a bit choked up at the end, not just for the story but because I was saying goodbye to these wonderful creatures.

No Words…
Revisado: 10-06-21
Actually, no words would have been better. I’ve never listened to anything so overwrought and awful. The writing is so comically bad…(“comically” being the only adjective left in the thesaurus after the author laid waste to every other adjective and adverb in the English language). And the poor narrator treated this drivel like Shakespeare, which only made it more painful. I listened to a few chapters, then started skipping ahead to try and find the point. Nope. I’ve listened to some amazing books on Audible and some bad books as well, but this was the dentist’s chair from Marathon Man. And that’s an insult to a good movie.

Great story without cliché. I had to keep looking to see if there were 3 or 4 different narrators. It was an outstanding job. What a great listening experience.

Where’s the editor?
Revisado: 05-29-21
The potentially decent story is lost in hours of mind-numbingly inane details. Details about the reinforcement in duct tape. Details about a man getting dressed, one sock, another sock, one button, another... I had to skip and skip to get to the story buried under layers of verbosity. It could have been a brisk interesting story but was instead a 14 hour slog. Wow, how is this best seller material? And to be honest, there is not much special about the fearsome Jack Reacher in this story. A few punches and a pistol shot. That’s about it. I’m grateful for so many many ch better storytellers out there.

Extraordinary
Revisado: 09-15-20
Amazing heartbreaking book. This will stay with me for a long time. The narrator...what can I say? I kept telling myself there had to be multiple people narrating, that one person could not be all those different people. This is a brilliant read I shall recommend always.

A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. Beautiful Story
Revisado: 09-29-16
I thought that this was heartbreaking and beautiful story. I loved the inevitability of the plot, with no deus ex machina twists, but just a course of events that seemed real. I cared for the characters, all of them, and I loved the narrator. His voice expressed a kind of sadness and a weariness that I feel like the main character felt. I enjoyed this very much.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Five Stars to the 10th Power!
Revisado: 09-29-16
On September 15th, Audible Editor Laura emailed us and said "Stop what you're doing and listen to The Nix". So I did what she said...I bought it immediately and began to listen. I don't know how to articulate how wonderful this book is. I am in awe of the talent of the author...his creativity and imagination are amazing, combined with the incredibly hard challenge of putting his ideas into the perfect words. This is easily the best "first" novel I have ever experienced. And that experience was enhanced so much by the narration of Ari Fliakos. There are amazing narrators out there, but I have never listened to a book where I was absolutely certain that the way the characters sounded in the authors imagination were exactly the way they were recorded for the audiobook. I have never had so much fun listening to the characters of a novel. You really need to listen to the book, whether you buy it in print or not. I had a smile on my face for most of the 21 hours of this book, and when I looked and saw that I was down to only an hour left I was heartbroken. I did not want this story and these characters to leave my life. I could go on and on about The Nix, but I will just say, listen to me and Laura, and buy this book right now. I promise you it will be the best thing you hear all year.
