Not suited for Audible
Revisado: 10-05-22
The format of this book — with lots of tweets, hashtags, emails and chat rooms — makes it difficult and tedious to listen to. I will read the rest of it, as it an excellent novel. The fact that JK Rowling got pilloried for stating that “only women menstruate” makes it even more interesting as she describes the SJW subculture as the craven, bullying and dangerous fools they have become.

Beloved story, unfortunate performance
Revisado: 10-20-17
I have read this book more than once and was eager to hear the new translation. The language is fresher but the reader--oh, what a shame!!
She completely misses Kristin's
spirit, and is breathy and annoying.
I ended up buying the new translation
on Kindle and enjoyed it as much as
I did thirty years ago.
So, read it and pass on this.

Historia
1944. Physics professor Alfred Mendel and his family were trying to flee Paris when they were caught and forced onto a train, along with thousands of other Jewish families. At the other end of the long, torturous train ride, Alfred is separated from his family and sent to the men’s camp, where all of his belongings are tossed on a roaring fire. His books, his papers, his life’s work. The Nazis have no idea what they have just destroyed. And without that physical record, Alfred is one of only two people in the world with his particular knowledge. Knowledge that could start a war, or end it.

Historia
They moved everyone that long hot summer fifteen years ago. They needed a new reservoir and an old community seemed a cheap price to pay. They even dug up the dead and moved them too. But four inhabitants of the valley they couldn't move, for nobody knew where they were. Three little girls had gone missing, and the prime suspect in their disappearance, Benny Lightfoot. This was Andy Dalziel's worst case and now fifteen years on he looks set to relive it. It's another long hot summer.

Classic Andy and Pascoe with the always clever Wield and the up and coming Novello make this a winner.
Excellent narration by one of the great voice actors. Really enjoyed it.

Historia
Detective Carl Morck has received a bottle that holds an old and decayed message written in blood. It's a cry for help from two young brothers, tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. After floating in the ocean for years before turning up, the bottle sat forgotten, unopened, on a police department windowsill, before the seal was cracked and the gruesome message, written in Danish, was analyzed. Could it be real? Who are these boys, and why weren't they reported missing? Could they possibly still be alive?

Smashing good!
Revisado: 07-19-14
Would you consider the audio edition of A Conspiracy of Faith to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version. I can't imagine that this performance doesn't enhance the printed word.
Any additional comments?
This is a splendid performance of a well-crafted, intelligent mystery novel. The pacing and dialogue are extremely well done. The book is character-driven, and the plot is a rational one, not the overblown nonsense so common in the genre. A wonderful series--may there be many more.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Richard Ferrone ruins this fun book with creepy, nasal, singsong female voices. Nobody, but nobody sounds like his version. I gave up.
Eric Conger is great doing Virgil. Ferrone is on my blacklist, titled "Never more!"

Historia
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Couldn't wait for it to end
Revisado: 03-25-13
Would you try another book from Alan Bradley and/or Jayne Entwistle?
No. I found the plot to be silly. Yes, the book is light as air, but it barely stays on the table.
What could Alan Bradley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
It is possible that had I read the book instead of listened I might have enjoyed it more.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Too chirpy by half. Sounded like a squeaky toy in the jaws of a pit bull. The upper class enunciation seemed very forced and artificial
Could you see The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Oh, please. There are already too many lame teenybopper shows. A self-important
detective would be unbearable.
