Miss Marple, Eat Your Heart Out
Revisado: 09-05-22
My husband and I love these stories and wish someone would develop a TV series from them. We love the strong female characters and have debates about who would play Ida Bell and Gertie, who are Miss Marple’esque but way more funny. The Narrator has wonderful voices, but as my husband is from South Louisiana, the pronunciations of names drives us a little nutty. I really wish they had used a consultant to help with pronunciations - my husband would have helped for free. The accents are southern but not necessarily Louisiana accents, and this too could have been better researched. But otherwise, the narration is very good and brings personality and life to the characters.

Historia
This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

Must Read - Especially for Parents
Revisado: 09-10-21
Love Dr. Lembke's soothing voice and humility. I've read other books on how overindulgence leads to addictions of all kinds of things (even some seemingly innocuous), but this is definitely the most relatable, personal, and hopeful.

Perfect finale to a great series!

You'll laugh out loud and cry even if you aren't normally a crier.. Characters are so well developed you'll think they're real. The dialogue is witty and fresh. Voice acting is superb for all the characters!

Historia
Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.

Works Like Hypnosis
Revisado: 05-21-15
If you could sum up The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up in three words, what would they be?
Let stuff go!
Who was your favorite character and why?
This is a non-fiction book, so there are no characters. In the book, professional organizer and life coach, Marie Kondo, coaches people through the process of bringing order to their homes and lives.
What about Emily Woo Zeller’s performance did you like?
At first I thought she was rather monotone, but her presentation of the book began to grow on me. It dawned on me that she was the appropriate "voice" for Marie Kondo, calm, soothing, and reassuring. Her voice seems to work like hypnosis. I've listened to the book twice, and now to get ready for the next round of purging, I'm going to listen again. The sound of her voice (combined with Kondo's advice) really is the best motivational self-improvement recording I've ever heard. And it's working!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was very impressed with the psychology behind "why" people accumulate things they no longer need or use. I love Marie Kondo's "let it go" advice, particularly when she reminds us that the joy that an item once brought us is always with us in our hearts.
Any additional comments?
As a western Christian, some of the cultural and religious aspects of the book were foreign and even odd to me at times. I couldn't embrace all of her ideas, and the idea of her talking to her belongings and thanking them was just strange. However, it was easy for me to take what she was saying and translate it through my worldview lens. Underneath her religious practices, I was able to find common ground principles that I could apply in my own way - like remembering to express thankfulness to God for my belongings, cultivating a spirit of contentment, not fearing the future, etc...
