Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Did not enjoy
Revisado: 11-17-22
I couldn’t finish this book. I did enjoy the beginning, but when about 6 hours remained I was skipping past parts altogether. I should have known I would not enjoy a fairy-tale type book, but with Stephen King as author I thought it would be more enjoyable. Narration was fine.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Lovely non-fiction-ish Book
Revisado: 02-17-22
I really enjoyed reading this book. I had to keep reminding myself that it was non-fiction (mostly). Absolutely worth a read!

Good writing, not so good of a story
Revisado: 01-18-22
I think the author has a pleasant writing style and uses great descriptive language to paint a clear picture, but I did not enjoy this story line. It was not believable and it felt like something I would’ve really enjoyed reading at age 16 and not as an adult. The narrators “male” voice is hard to listen to. If you just want to be entertained it’s a fine read, but if you’re looking to be intrigued and challenged then this is not the book for you. Especially if you have any knowledge of the criminal justice system.

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Not good.
Revisado: 04-27-21
This book was very painful. It was made worse by the narration, but it felt like watching a cheesy “Southern Fried Homicide”. I completed the book for the sake of knowing the end, but it was not a pleasant journey and a cringeworthy reading by the narrator, specifically the second half of the book, the first half was not as bad.

Historia
On a snowy winter evening in 1982, 21-year-old Mary Brown accepted a ride from a handsome stranger in the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The trip ended with her brutally beaten and raped. Mary survived, but her predator's violence had only just begun. After 10 years in prison, Tom Luther was released a far more vicious criminal. Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap.

Great story, but some issues with the era
Revisado: 11-19-20
I overall really enjoyed this book, the story is told well and it’s intriguing. My only qualms are with the language that was typical of the late 90s when this was actually published. It was written in a time when victim blaming was fine if they engaged in “high risk behaviors” or hung around the “wrong crowd”. I know this narrative would be written differently today, so I do not hold this against the author, it’s simply a sign of the times and I’m reminded of how happy I am that views have shifted since that time regarding victimization.
