Poorly performed and very dry prose. Reads like a textbook which I guess it is.

In We Don't Know Ourselves, Fintan O'Toole weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society - perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism.

Irish story telling at its Best
Revisado: 03-30-25
I wanted a book about Irish history expecting to be bored in places but this book is an exemplar of factual yet riveting story telling. I will most likely listen to it again because it was so enjoyable. The performance was spot on. I will be looking for more writing from the author.

From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

I knew Facebook was evil but…..
Revisado: 03-17-25
I thought Francis Haugen’s testimony was bad but this book lays bare the utter disregard for human decency at the top of Facebook.
The author writes authentic stories and she has the receipts. She tells a riveting story of idealism that confronts reality in heartbreaking detail.
And the fact that Facebook is trying to get the book removed from publication is all you need to know that she has hit a nerve.
Her narration is very easy to listen to.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Horrible narration and sound recording.

When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

I forgot to mention the narration. It was the next best thing to having Sam Elliott narrate. Michael Kramer has the laconic and deeply resonant voice that is perfect for this book.

Join Clara Parkes on a cross-country adventure and meet a cast of characters that includes the shepherds, dyers, and countless workers without whom our knitting needles would be empty, our mills idle, and our feet woefully cold. Travel the country with her as she meets a flock of Saxon Merino sheep in upstate New York, tours a scouring plant in Texas, visits a steamy Maine dyehouse, helps sort freshly shorn wool on a working farm, and learns how wool fleece is measured, baled, shipped, and turned into skeins.

As a knitter of wool and other natural fibers, I learned a lot about wool production and the trials and tribulations of wool producers and processors that had somehow skipped over me. The personal stories of the people trying to keep wool production alive in the US is astounding and heartbreaking.
Thank you Clara for bringing this story to light.

Historia
When Andrew McCarthy's eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, McCarthy found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few others: 500 miles across Spain's Camino de Santiago. Over the course of the journey, the pair traversed an unforgiving landscape, having more honest conversations in five weeks than they'd had in the preceding two decades.

Historia
More than any other presidency, Barack Obama's eight years in the White House were defined by young people - 20-somethings who didn't have much experience in politics (or anything else, for that matter) yet suddenly found themselves in the most high-stakes office building on earth. David Litt was one of those 20-somethings. After graduating from college in 2008, he went straight to the Obama campaign. In 2011 he became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history.

Honest and hilarious
Revisado: 08-14-21
I’ve listened to a few Obama White House memoirs and I wasn’t expecting this to be much different but it was. Although most
Obama staffers are self-effacing, David Litt takes the cake. He’s funny and honest about his job at the White House including admitting that he played Minecraft on the taxpayer’s dime, that he told Obama he looked like Hitler to his face, and more. This book is worth the listen.

Historia
It began in a women's club in London on a February afternoon. A discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed to "Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine..." lures four very different women away from the dismal British weather to San Salvatore, a castle high above a bay on the sunny Italian Riviera. There, the Mediterranean spirit stirs the souls of Mrs Arbuthnot, Mrs Wilkins, Lady Caroline Dester, and Mrs Fisher, and remarkable changes occur.

Revisado: 07-29-21
Of course I’d seen the movie and enjoyed it, but the book is as good or better. Hearing the interior lives of the characters fills the story with depth. The slight change in the ending was a surprise. The narrator was perfect.
I’ve been listening to a lot of these classic books by female authors and am surprised at how truly feminist they were for their time.
A thoroughly enjoyable listen.
