Historia
Allan Pinkerton sat in the reception area of the Executive Mansion, wondering if he had made a mistake by coming. Many men would have been intimidated by the prospect of meeting with the President of the United States of America, but that wasn’t what was bothering Pinkerton. In fact, he had sat in the same chair in that outer office many times before, waiting to see the current president’s predecessor.

This shows the absolute power a properly written (and delivered, for that matter) short story can wield. Exceptional.

Historia
Donald E. Westlake is one of the greats of crime fiction. Under the pseudonym Richard Stark, he wrote 24 fast-paced, hard boiled novels featuring Parker, a shrewd career criminal with a talent for heists. Westlake also completed a separate series in the Parker universe, starring Alan Grofield, an occasional colleague of Parker. The Dame finds Grofield in Puerto Rico protecting a rich, demanding woman in her isolated jungle villa, and reluctantly assuming the role of detective.

Grofield series is certainly a hit. Such an engaging and criminally libertine character. The Dame is a short but sweet romp.

Nice and seedy Holiday themed crime novel is a fun read for those that like it dark...... and don't like the insipid Holidays.

Historia
When ex-cop Matt Scudder thought back on the summer of '75, two faces emerged from behind the smoky haze of a half dozen boozy saloons that made up his beat - Skip Devoe and Tommy Tillary - two bar flies he wouldn't have given a second thought to in the bright light of day. Yet they and their troubles were the reason that moved him a little farther out of the bleary-eyed mess that had become his life.

Fantastic. With an ending out of nowhere.
Revisado: 07-10-19
As usual, you feel like you are in the seedy bar room, with all the desperation and denial...and as usual, Block makes all the people seem real. Just like you are there watching the whole dirty deal go down. Brilliant.

Great ending, and this really sets the tone for Scudder novels to come. I wish I would have read this first, instead of later Scudder titles beforehand. Do 'em in order!

Outside the apartment where a wake is going on, the manager of the A&P across the street is robbed. Reverend Short, a storefront preacher addicted to opium and brandy, is watching from a bedroom window in the flat. He leans out too far and falls, but a huge bread basket, sitting outside the bakery below, saves him. Back inside, he says he sees a vision of a dead man. Outside, in the very basket Short landed in, lies the body of Valentine Haines. Who murdered Val? It is up to Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson to find out.

This is some Audio Blackface.
Revisado: 03-12-19
Honestly, I was really looking forward to this. However, the narrator was way too affected. Almost comical. The Step-n'Fetchit patois was unbelievable, and even a bit offensive. Too bad.

Insane Ending!
Revisado: 02-25-16
I read the preceding book by this author and it was pretty good, so I gave this one a chance. I'm glad I did and I did not really know what direction it was going throughout most of the story. to say that the ending is a surprise is an understatement. The story is read professionally and entertainingly so by the reader. As for the author, what a nutcase! Completely sadistic and depraved writing at the end and I mean that in the best possible way. After reading this I have to feel that there is no way Richard Aleas should be left alone around any woman.

Terrible accents mar the experience.
Revisado: 02-12-16
While the story is fine, I agree with another reviewer that Will Patton has gone astray with his accent in this story especially cincerning the French Female character. It's so bad that I'm having difficulty finishing it , and I love James Lee Burke and his work. The worst part is it's coming at the end of the book and I don't know if I'm going to be able to get through this. Really bad. It's strange because he's usually pretty good.
