The Merry Band of Pirates stopped the enemy from stealing a Sentinel, and destroyed its Elder starship, so why weren’t the Pirates planning a victory party? The enemy was not what they thought it was. It was much, much worse.

Narrator has gotta go
Revisado: 09-13-23
Story is really good and keeps me going. However, this narrator is atrocious. When I reviewed the last book I had said there were a few thing I hoped were improved on her part. None of them were. She still gives everyone either a very breathy almost husky voice or gives them an awkward sarcastic tone with an uplift. And she still enunciates the punctuation with her cadence and takes awkward pauses for breaths breaking sentences into 4-5 word chunks. Please I hope book 3 has a different narrator. I understand the story is supposed to be being told from the point of view of a futuristic ship ai, but come on now. I hate saying it, but Miss Narrator is doing this series a disservice.

Historia
Five years after physicist Mark Holder discovered the Slipstream Drive in 2058, humanity reached for the stars and began to colonize the galaxy. For centuries, humans continued to populate system after system without encountering intelligent alien life. Some 1,200 years later, after many generations of relative peace, in the year 3278, human space is invaded by a powerful and mysterious enemy. To these invaders, the very concept of free will is heresy. Their crusade—to eradicate humanity. The war begins, and the fight for the survival of the human race is on.

Narration was rough
Revisado: 09-11-23
As my headline said, the narration was rough. Trying to use words other than “absolutely terrible,” she sounded almost out of breath. Sentences and dialogue also had awkward pauses, almost as if she was enunciating the punctuation. Emotional context of the dialogue was almost nonexistent and when it was present it almost seemed incorrect. Like sarcasm, snark or flippant responses when I don’t think the context of the story warranted such. Or even when the author had specified in the book how someone said something, she completely missed it. I’m going on and listening to book 2 in hopes that some of these issues are resolved. The story is interesting enough to let me look past the narrator for now, but stay tuned

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

Meh-some at best
Revisado: 02-13-23
As a series finale, I felt this installment was underwhelming at best. I’ve listened through it a couple of times now and my initial disappointment was confirmed. Without a doubt, RC Bray’s narration is phenomenal. The story itself though, in my opinion, was not a finale story. The interactions between Skippy and Joe seemed on point, however so many plot threads and characters fell to the wayside.
It almost seemed like an end to part one of story. Like Skippy and some of the Merry Band of Pirates will be back in a future iteration of the series. Maybe I’m just an optimist, but I’d really like to think that Craig Alanson knows how to stick the landing and didn’t completely botch what should have been grade A awesomeness. I’m going to review this book and this series like he did botch it though because I can only grade with what I see. There were so many unanswered threads throughout the entirety of the series that it could have been trimmed down to 8-10 books, including the Mavericks books, with most of the supporting characters eliminated.
That’s my take anyway. Maybe in the future, with more works in this universe (if that is the plan), I won’t feel so harshly about the conclusion of this story.

Historia
The fourth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Cibola Burn sees the crew of the Rocinante on a new frontier, as the rush to colonize the new planets threatens to outrun law and order and give way to war and chaos. Enter a new frontier. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave".

Minor pet peeve with the narrator. HUD should be pronounced at a word. EVA should be spelled out. And he has them flipped. Other than that, awesome work by both writer and narrator

Comrades
Revisado: 09-03-20
As I’ve been listening to this series while I drive, there’s certain buzz words that the author loves to use that are becoming... grating. Comrades. Everyone is everyone’s comrade. I’ve considered developing a drinking game for that particular word. But I’m driving so probably not a good idea.
As others have reviewed, this book as well as most of the series thus far could be significantly shortened if the constant rehashing of main character’s doubts and recriminations was cut out. I would assume that if someone is reading or listening this far into the series, they know what happened. They were there. Maybe just a passing acknowledgment that the character is still beating his or her self up over some past action. Then move on.
I do very much enjoy the premise of this series. I have come to like many of the characters. And Mr Allen does a fantastic job with the action of the battle sequences, once he gets to it and stops pandering about to pad the word count.
I will continue to listen and read the series. It has been an excellent way to pass the 8 hours a day driving. I would greatly enjoy a revision at some point in the future as well though. One that trims out the fat and overuse of certain words and phrases.
