Historia
With his characteristic eyebrow-raising behavior, Richard P. Feynman once provoked the wife of a Princeton dean to remark, "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman!" But the many scientific and personal achievements of this Nobel Prize-winning physicist are no laughing matter. Here, woven with his scintillating views on modern science, Feynman relates the defining moments of his accomplished life.

Feynman is awesome ... period
Revisado: 07-21-24
what an incredible book. I could relate with so many of his stories. I absolutely love his no bs, slightly humble - slightly haughty, yet honest approach to telling stories about his crazy little life.

Historia
In these brilliant essays, Lightman explores the emotional life of science, the power of imagination, the creative moment, and the alternate ways in which scientists and humanists think about the world. Along the way, he provides in-depth portraits of some of the great geniuses of our time, including Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Edward Teller, and astronomer Vera Rubin. Thoughtful, beautifully written, and wonderfully original, A Sense of the Mysterious confirms Alan Lightman's unique position at the crossroads of science and art.

Somebody who thinks the same as I do
Revisado: 07-06-24
The stories and experiences related in this book seemed perfectly aligned with several things I've been thinking about lately. it's reflective, it's memorable, it covers historical figures in the sciences and personal experiences of the author. and they are all profound and beautiful and humbling and thought-provoking.

The mission of Watrehouse and Detachment 2702 - commanded by Marine Raider Bobby Shaftoe - is to keep the Nazis ignorant of the fact that Allied Intelligence has cracked the enemy's fabled Enigma code. In the present, Waterhouse's crypto-hacker grandson, Randy, is attempting to create a "data haven" in Southeast Asia....

Best story I've heard in a long, long time
Revisado: 04-15-24
I'm in awe at how much the author needed to know and understand about a multitude of topics in order to write this book. I spent some time in the Philippines, and despite the mispronunciation of Tagolog and other Tagolog words (not the authors fault) ... the details were spot on.
I loved the knowledge of mathematics, Unix, history, military shenanigans ... and the ability to weave top level humor into all of it. phenomenal book on every level!

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

A Gentle Reminder of What We Already Knew

Love this book. Everybody should take the time to absorb the principles ... principles we all already knew intuitively but tend to forget as we get caught up in our daily lives.

good but could have been shorter
Revisado: 03-15-24
this was a pretty good book. A lot of good examples and stories. Good points about shifting your paradigm or frame. but it could have been a lot shorter towards the end. I felt like it was just saying in the same thing over and over. but all in all pretty good stuff 🙂

Historia
We live in an extraordinary time. Technological advances are happening at a rate faster than our ability to understand them, and in a world that moves faster than we can imagine, we cannot afford to stand still. These advances bring efficiency and abundance - and they are profoundly deflationary. Our economic systems were built for a pre-technology era when labor and capital were inextricably linked - an era that counted on growth and inflation and an era where we made money from inefficiency.

He is so close ...
Revisado: 03-07-24
Finally, somebody has begun to piece it together. Booth is so, incredibly close. Psychology, sociology, economics, thermodynamics ... I've been working on this problem for just under a decade and I am pleased to hear that somebody out there has collected all of the pieces and had begun to put them together. This is a brilliant book that will give the reader the puzzle pieces needed to recognize the solution when it tastes is head.
Bravo! Everybody should read this book.

One of the best reads in a long time
Revisado: 02-26-24
Absolutely brilliant! I had procrastinated starting this book for so long simply because of the length, but that was a mistake. once I started it, it was hard to set it back down. Excellent read by all standards! there's action and magic and there is the exposing of humanities darkest sides, and there is good vs evil and rebirth and love, etc. it just had the perfect amount of everything.

Excellent science-heavy history of thermodynamics
Revisado: 02-08-24
This was a wonderful recounting of the individuals, their thoughts, and their environments that all had a part in the development of thermodynamics. It does get a little math heavy at some points, but even if you're mildly familiar with these equations it shouldn't be too hard to follow.

He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. Just finished this for the second time. The first time was on my own, the second time was as a bedtime story for my kid. She absolutely adores Rocky. So do I if I'm being honest.
Phenomenal work from A.W.

Historia
Less than fifty thousand years ago mankind had no art, no religion, no sophisticated symbolism, no innovative thinking. Then, in a dramatic and electrifying change, described by scientists as "the greatest riddle in human history," all the skills and qualities that we value most highly in ourselves appeared already fully formed, as though bestowed on us by hidden powers.

Excellent Philosophical Exercise
Revisado: 07-18-23
I really like Graham Hancock. this book was interesting, it was creatively philosophical, and it presented a lot of interesting ideas that are very very edgy. a lot of people are not going to like this book. there are going to be tons of critics that think this is just way too far out there. however, even i- a deeply skeptical person- found this to be skeptical enough itself and just posing a potential possibility given the subjective experiences of a variety of accounts throughout history up until these modern days. I appreciate that. Graham Hancock specifically pointed out the unsure nature of his hypothesis. that even he is not certain or does not fully believe what he is presenting. very interesting book. I really liked it.
