Prologue - way too long to literally say the same thing. He bothers her ok MOVE ON!

The writing just became to much. Too many words too many descriptions too many analogies god, how many time can you describe two petulant adults who “hate” each-other. I was bored at the stop light!! It took me three days to stomach this book and now DNF

Narrator made Lucia unbearable

I was genuinely excited to dive into this story especially with all the hype from “gram” & “fbook” around its plot. Unfortunately, I found myself unable to continue with the audiobook due to two main factors: the narrating voice for the lead female character and the character's attitude itself. [Sidenote: I'm also not a fan of the way the narrator does the male character. But this review has nothing to do with that portion of the story.]

Let's start with the narration of Lucia. The voice of her character is incredibly distracting. At first, I tried to push through, thinking it might be a matter of getting used to it, but no. The “come hither nasal sultry” voice quickly became more irritating than charming. It was as if the narrator was trying to make Lucia sound grown and independent and also bratty however, it felt forced and a little too over-the-top. The way her voice fluctuated with exaggerated emphasis to make statements or words sexier than they needed to be made it difficult to connect with her as a character.

Now I’m basing Lucia’s attitude off the voice of the narrator so maybe if I read it, her attitude won’t be so petulant in my head. That being said, Lucia’s attitude, she's supposed to be a strong, independent assassin, but instead, her attitude comes off as petulance for no reason. 1. She was given a choice! (very integral) 2. She gets to keep her job. (also integral) Then she spends the majority of what I’ve read literally having an attitude for no reason. (Again, this might be because of the narrator). Every time she opens her mouth, she's either complaining, dismissive of advice, or lashing out. I had to relisten to certain parts a few times because I couldn't understand why she had an attitude. (narrators choice?)

It's exhausting especially when the character doesn't show any depth or vulnerability to balance out her irritating tendencies. I understand that some listeners might appreciate this kind of character arc, but when combined with a narration that rolls my eyes to the depth of my feet it becomes impossible to stay engaged. I found myself just deciding to DNF in audio format.

8 chapters in and I’m still waiting for this good story to happen. FMC is boring and I can’t find what the MMC sees.

Dr. vs 1st name thing was childish and completely off putting to take her as a Doctor seriously. Her whole attitude made her childish and unrespectable IMO. His childish behavior was more believable as a man who had wit and charisma. Hers was again childish and made her unappealing. I literally would tell her to grow up if I met her.

It doesn’t help that the narrator makes her sound like shes childish and immature.

Then of course it’s the whole “oh my GOD my panties are so wet” just from looking at him. Is she a teenager, Is she in adolescence. Ugh

I had to stop after Chapter 7, and just skipped through chapters. EVERYTIME I stopped to listen I was BORED!!!!!! A no point of my skipping did I miss any of the story, that's how long winded it was. I skipped two whole chapters and missed nothing. I'm Sorry, THE WHOLE STORY was nothing other than boring. I tried to listen while folding laundry and it was just dry. By the end I figured this story could have been 10 chapters and ok . Instead I had to listen, yes LISTEN to a wearisome, lengthy, long winded mundane story.

The worst part is that in the AUDIBLE version, the narrators were casted perfectly. The voices and personality that the narrators tried to give the characters were spot on. But even that could not make the story intriguing.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Mostly because I couldn't get into the story completely. At points the MFC understands her predicament and then she doesn't. She displays strength and then in another she completely breaks. At points where she thinks she's in love with the MC just didn't make sense. It was to much back and forth and too fast to be believed. The MMC was the same way. He was using the FC for revenge but was somehow also possessive and in love with her. I felt confused trying to stay with the story.

The triggers didn't bother me as much as the story. Again, I am so unsure.

There is obviously a part 2 so maybe then it will make sense but I just don't know.

The story was great but after the first book and the continuing of the being able to hear the narrator re-moistening her mouth is disgusting. I’m sorry for the crassness but when you’re listening and then all of sudden you can hear whatever the narrator is doing is very distracting. It happens every 15-30 seconds which adds up. Had to stop

I started this journey with the potential to hear a gripping story unfortunately my enthusiasm was quickly halted by the one crucial element needed: the narrators, specifically Morae Brehon.

I’ve had issues listening to stories narrated by her and it’s usually the same problem. It’s not her voice but how she is using it. My first distraction cones at the meeting between Jack and Noel in his office where Noel comes for help. The narration comes across completely different than the words being narrated. Noel is desperate for help after being blackmailed and the narrator reads her as “seductive and lustful” like one if those women from the old B&W private dick movies, but horribly. Additionally Morae narrates the male character in her usual disappointing way, making it hard to not get distracted. Sean Crisden does a fine job with his slow southern drawl but even his “Noel” voice portrayal is off. Sounding more like a snobby teenager rather than a 25 year rebel who was able to start a life from the under the thumb of her obnoxious mother and politician father.

That being said, the story of Jack and Noel is showing promise of an enchanting romance from two characters who are oblivious to the others’ reciprocated feelings.
