Historia
Dante's Inferno, his depiction of hell, was written while Europe was suffering through war, famine, the corruption of the Church, and the evils of the pogrom - the brutal massacre of countless Jews. Shortly after Dante's passing, the black plague killed off half the world's population, an end-of-days-like event that birthed a legend depicted in paintings and dance: the Grim Reaper. What few people know is that Dante's poem draws inspiration from the Zohar, an ancient text that warns that the true end of days will be brought on by the corruption of man.

Felt to much like a theology/history lesson
Revisado: 07-19-24
I wanted to like this book, but in the end, I just couldn't. There were to many parts that felt like unnecessary theology lessons that were wedged into the book that did not add much, if anything, to the overarching story.
I also felt taken out of the story every time a new character or location was introduced, because it always seemed to require a complete backstory that did not feel necessary or organic to the story in any way. I kept thinking that the first draft of the story must have come in to short, so he filled space by including backstory.
In the end I wasn't able to finish this book. I gave up with about four hours left. I haven't returned it because I may give it another go, but for now I'm glad this wasn't the first Steve Alten book I listened to. I would recommend Loch Ness instead, it was much a much better story.

Fifty years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins—sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.

good story / poor naration
Revisado: 09-19-21
I enjoyed the story. Pendergast had become a bit ordinary as of late, and having a stranger story was welcome.
Unfortuntly the reading was not great. The narration was okay, but the voices were not up to par. Constance sounded older than my 93 year old mother and Pendergast lacked much of his southern accent. But the worst part was the column level. I suggest you do not listen to this book through ear buds. You'll miss parts and go deaf in others. I first tried listening to the book through earbuds and thought I was going to go deaf when the reader yelled things out. Then I tried listening to it in the car where sections were so faint you couldn't hear them. Finally I listened sitting on my deck through a speaker with my phone in hand so I could work the volumn.

Who decides these things?
Revisado: 02-20-12
While I enjoyed the story overall, even though it seemed to take a while to get started, and then seemed to meander around kind of aimlessly, what I absolutely HATE about this audio book is the "Music" selection between chapters. Just as I'd start getting into the story, and really getting tensed up wanting to know what was going to happen next, the chapter would change, and this god awful "music" would come on, which would pull me completely out of the book. There were a couple of times I wanted to claw the earbuds out of my ears, it was so awful. I'm going to finish the book, just to find out how the story ends, but I'm pretty sure I won't listen to this one again.

Historia
Roland Deschain and his ka-tet are bearing southeast through the forests of Mid-World, the almost timeless landscape that seems to stretch from the wreckage of civility that defined Roland's youth to the crimson chaos that seems the future's only promise. Followers of Stephen King's epic series know Roland well, or as well as this enigmatic hero can be known. They also know the companions who have been drawn to his quest for the Dark Tower: Eddie Dean and his wife, Susannah; Jake Chambers; and Oy.

Easily the best
Revisado: 09-23-11
This is easily the best of the Dark Tower books by Steven King, and is probably the one with the broadest appeal. It takes the classic backdrop of a spaghetti western, set in the Gunslinger's work. The action is fast paced throughout the book, and you can certainly enjoy this one without having read any of the other books.
If you've enjoyed the Dark Tower books so far, this should be more than satisfying, and if you haven't read any of them, but have enjoyed westerns in the past, you should give this book a try!

Finally!
Revisado: 09-23-11
I am so happy that this has finally been made available in unabridged format! I've listened to this book on CD numerous times, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how they managed to cut 10 hours of audio out to make the abridged version
That aside, this is an absolute page turner featuring Pendergast, and introducing us to Cory Swanson, who re-appears in later books. Excellent book, and highly recommended!
