Great story, good reader, obnoxious production
Revisado: 07-29-24
The Woman in Black is an atmospheric tale, written in the mold of Henry James, Oliver Onions, Elizabeth Gaskell. Mystery and subtlety are the mainstays of this type of story, which builds slowly toward the revelation of its ghost. This is one to give you the creeps on a quiet evening, not one to shock the senses.
But don’t worry, the producers of this audiobook are here to fix that problem! Dramatic musical cues, Halloween sound effects, audio jump scares — they have pulled out the whole arsenal to make certain you are entertained. Forgot what a barking dog sounds like? Forgot what it sounds like to open a door or switch on a light? Never been within ten miles of a rocking chair? They have you covered here as well, with plenty of loud, redundant sounds to distract from Hill’s graceful and effective prose. If you like reading, but think it should be more like a bag of Flamin’ Hot Nacho Cheese Doritos, then by all means download this audiobook.

Historia
A brilliant mixture of paranoia and Lovecraftian horror from one of today's most decorated and well-respected authors of horror/dark fantasy. When his father disappears, Gavin Meadows’ search uncovers a race of semi-human beings that have existed in—and under—the city for centuries.

Creepy and delicious
Revisado: 10-05-22
Campbell is a phenomenal stylist, and his powers are on full display here. This is not a plot-heavy, high action novel — but the atmosphere is intensely creepy, and it’s morbid good fun to follow the central character as he gets sucked deeper and deeper into the strange mystery of damp old Liverpool. Recommended for rainy fall evenings!

Historia
Patrick Torrington’s aunt Thelma was a successful artist whose late work turned towards the occult. While staying with her in his teens, he found evidence that she used to visit magical sites. As an adult, he discovers her journal of her explorations, and his teenage son Roy becomes fascinated, too. His experiences at the sites scare Patrick away from them, but Roy carries on the search, together with his new girlfriend. Can Patrick convince his son that his increasingly terrible suspicions are real, or will what they’ve helped to rouse take a new hold on the world?

Creepy, Brilliant, and Beautiful
Revisado: 01-14-22
Ramsey Campbell is an incredible prose stylist, and The Wise Friend is among his most impressive works. Tension and fear mount steadily in this novel, beginning with hints and worrisome implications, and arriving at outright conflict with a supernatural malevolence. If you’re looking for high action and gore, this is not your book. But if you’re looking for the creeping weird that waits around every corner, and the eerie magic of language and the land, then by all means enjoy. If you like this book, I’d also highly recommend Campbell’s The Influence and Creatures of the Pool.
