Historia
Dale Hanson takes us from a northern Minnesota boyhood to the incredible stresses of US special operations during the Vietnam War, the deadly world of MAC-V-SOG, the top-secret Special Forces project that conducted America’s secret war against the Communist forces on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Shrouded in mystery and equipped with exotic weaponry, SOG operators suffered casualty rates in excess of 100 percent for three successive years.

Beginning snd End are powerful
Revisado: 08-26-24
I have read many memoirs of Vietnam and many of them have been by men who were LRRPs, Rangers and SOG Warriors. Every book has been a great read. This one, however, is different and it is, therefore, difficult to review and rate. Negatives first but please don’t stop with them.
My first comment is picky but I believe worth making. The author reads the book himself and, in my opinion, it would have been better had another person with more performance skills done so. With rare exception,
(when mimicking a “Yard’s”voice), the reading is in a monotone that detracts.
My second comment is too much of the book is devoted to his life before entering the military. I think his pre service life could have been done much more concisely. He jumps from a great beginning chapter to 7 or 8 chapters of growing up in Northern Minnesota. Same with his travel from US to Europeans South Africa on him is way back to Vietnam for his second tour after home leave after being wounded on his first tour,
Third, I believe the book has too much of the author’s political and religious views in it. I was especially bothered by his characterization of Martin Luther King (though he doesn’t use his name) as a part of communist fifth column bent on making our country communist. I also found offensive his defense of the apartheid governments of South Africa and Rhodesia. Another statement that left be bewildered was that Alexander the Great died of syphilis at the age of 26! Not only does he get his age at death wrong, there is absolutely no historical evidence that syphilis was the cause of death. Why he included it other than his disdain for Alexander’s life style is perplexing.
Not withstand my criticisms, i think the war story Mr Hansen tells us is a worthy listen. He, as all SOG warriors were, a brave man, and served our country far beyond what were ordinary men could have done I appreciate his service for us and am glad he survived to tell it. Indeed, the first chapter and the last two chapters are very powerful and moving. What I especially like in the DEROS chapter is the clear affection and respect the author shows for the “Yards” who fought with him. I do recommend this book even if I don’t agree with the political views of the author.

In mid-December 1968, after recovering from wounds sustained in a murderous mission, Gary Linderer returned to Phu Bai to complete his tour of duty as a LRP. His job was to find the enemy, observe him, or kill him - all the while behind enemy lines, where success could be as dangerous as discovery.

Revisado: 08-19-24
This book is like a diary each chapter is a day of the author’s Vietnam tour Another honest account by a a very brave man who reveals his fears that accumulate with each Ranger/LLRP mission And the end reveals the long term consequences of the service and makes feel very bad that our country did embrace and honor the men who served in combat in Vietnam They were as good as soldiers this country ever sent into harms way

Historia
Larry Chambers was still new to Vietnam in early 1969 when the LRRPs of the 101st Airborne Division became L Company, 75th (Rangers). But his unit's mission stayed the same: act as the eyes and ears of the 101st deep in the dreaded A Shau Valley - where the NVA ruled. Relentless thick fog frequently made fighter bombers useless in the A Shau, and the enemy had furnished the nearby mountaintops with antiaircraft machine guns to protect the massive trail network that snaked through it. So, outgunned, outmanned, and unsupported, the teams of L Company executed hundreds of courageous missions.

A great story of brave me
Revisado: 08-15-24
I found this to be an excellent book. I have read a number of books on Rangers, LRRPs and SOG warriors and their war in Vietnam. This one ranks in the top ranks of those books. .The guys who served in those units ad did the missions they did were the bravest of the brave. I salute them, It is sad that so many in our country are so very ignorant about the bravery of these men and all those that saw combat in that nasty war that the country has so badly wanted to forget The end of the book is heart breaking. The epilogue is spot on

Historia
Eighteen-year-old Marine recruit William V. Taylor, Jr. and his brother Marines are assembled into a new reaction force that is immediately tested in the fire of a bloody conflict known as Operation Beaver Cage. After a traumatic first fight, they push through back-to-back operations with little time to rest or reflect. Those who survive will return home ensnared by everlasting memories of a real but entirely surreal nightmare. Now, after more than 50 years of holding everything in, Taylor shares his experience in explicit—and often horrific—detail.

A very good listen u
Revisado: 08-11-24
I liked listening to this book very much. A well balanced memoir of that horrible war . I appreciated the honest assessment, good and bad, of the officers and NCOs that lead these men. It was so sad to think of those young Marines dying and for what The epilogue with it’s poem written by one of those Marines who died one month in to his tour was an especially powerful end to this book I recommend reading it And this REMF draftee in that war thanks the author for what he and they did I especially thank preserving the memory of his fallen brothers by name

Que Son Valley is actually a large area of hills and valleys just to the west of Da Nang, Viet Nam. During the 1960s, units from the US Marines and US Army engaged the 2nd North Vietnamese Division in heavy and close combat. Our mission was to keep the enemy from capturing the cities of Da Nang, Tam Ky, and Chu Lai and to pacify the area. We did prevent the enemy from capturing these vital cities, but the area was far from pacified.

Making it through to the end was worth it
Revisado: 08-03-24
I read a lot on the Vietnam War. For a considerable part of it I was not impressed. It didn’t grab me as many of the memoirs I have read have. Not sure exactly why but I nonetheless continued to listen. I am very glad I did. What I liked was the integrity of the author at the end of the book. I won’t spoil it for others by defining what impressed me Reflecting on the whole book after finishing it, I decided the book had to be rated higher than I thought as I read it He was 18 when he arrived in Vietnam and like many turned nineteen there. I was 23 when I arrived and turned 24 I was lucky and not in the field Jesus far better than I likely have done had the roles been reversed As one Vietnam Veteran to another: I appreciate you and your service I recommend reading this book

Among the best books ever written about men in combat, The Killing Zone tells the story of the platoon of Delta One-six, capturing what it meant to face lethal danger, to follow orders, and to search for the conviction and then the hope that this war was worth the sacrifice. The book includes a new chapter on what happened to the platoon members when they came home.

War was hell in Quang Ngai in 1968
Revisado: 06-11-24
And this book is a vivid picture of that hell I was impressed by the author’s full story including his after the war life at the Veterans Administration It kept me on edge the whole time I read it I felt for Lt Downs and his men Proud of him and them too. The Army we sent to Vietnam was one of the best ever fielded by any nation certainly at the level this story tells—its leadership may not been our finest This is a book that helps one understand, if not approve, what happened at My Lai What our combat soldiers went through was horrific It’s too easy to condemn when you haven’t had to walk in their boots

A Story of a Courageous Few
Revisado: 04-21-24
I did not listen to this book in one “read” It took time as it was painful, it caused nightmares. I felt I was there it is told so well. I was drafted and went to Vietnam but was in the rear though my my MOS was combat support. I thought over and over as I listened, but for the grace of God This is na great book because it was about ordinary men who did extraordinary things u under difficult circumstances. I feel for them for the brothers they lost And as some make clear at the end: for what?

In this intimate memoir, Perry A. Ulander chronicles with powerful clarity the bewildering predicament he confronted and the fellowship and guidance that transformed him during the year he served as an American GI in the jungles of Vietnam. Conveying with unadorned precision the harrowing experiences that shattered his core beliefs, Ulander also captures the camaraderie and humor of his platoon, the hostility between "lifers" and draftees, the physical hardships of reconnaissance missions, and the unrelenting apprehension underlying everyday life.

A great Vietnam War Memoire
Revisado: 01-27-24
The author was a part of group of dope head mon conformists. They did their “jobs” as grunts with true courage, but they like all who went just wanted to survive. I especially enjoyed the author’s survival technique. The book has lots of very interesting takes on life, death and the war—the author, and his fellows had their sh— together They were more than friends, more than brothers—they were a oneness according to the author I like that concept I recommend this book highly but if you want glorification or flag waiving skip it

I am not sure fully why but this listen took a long time to get through My only criticism is that the author comes across as a little bit of a know it all and that turned me off
Nonetheless he deserves the highest respect for being a real combat veteran I am glad I made it through his story Live long and prosper Larry Musson

Good listen
Revisado: 11-09-23
At first the recounting of the history of the young Marines as they entered the Corps was a little tedious but by the end I appreciated it It made these brace young men alive in my mind and resulted in real tears z’when they died They weren’t statistics; or names in a wall; they were real people who I wished could have lived I liked especially the commentary at the end on the feelings of the survivors on the lose of friends, their treatment after returning, the outrageous rules of engagement that made the war un-winnable Worthy listen
