A beautiful, well written story causing us all to remember the painful reality of the Holocaust. This time from a Greek perspective. While a work of fiction it contains many painful realities.

The Futility of War
Revisado: 03-11-24
This book could probably have been written about any war and the men and women who served. What made Viet Nam unique was the way those who served were treated when they returned. A shameful part of our history. I was the age of these women during the war and was married and a Surgical Technician who did not serve. My husband was in college and didn’t serve while many of his friends did. He felt guilty instead of angry with those who did. I did not know that the women who served were ignored. This book shed a light on their service and what they suffered.

The Importance of Truth & Lies

Another beautifully written book by Thrity Umrigar once again demonstrating the power of secrets as opposed to the cleansing light of truth and the beauty of reconciliation. It will leave your emotions dancing in a gentle breeze.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

The World in Black and White
Revisado: 02-11-24
Cicely Tyson has been one of my favorite actresses since I saw her in “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”. Not because she is black but because she was black but because she was a superb actress.“Sounder” is one of my favorite movies with many amazing actors without regard to color or gender or sexual orientation or religion. I loved learning about her life’s journey but was sad to discover that she viewed everything through a “colored” lens dare I say “racist”. She was an admirer of Martin Luther King but apparently not his “I Have a Dream” speech where he specifically states and I quote, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER”. Sadly today color is even more important but not character and it has caused great chaos and uncertainty. In a country in which a black man was elected president and a black woman, Oprah Winfrey, is the wealthiest woman in the world, should we not be focusing on the progress we have made with a view to making more progress?

Historia
Alan Dershowitz has been called “one of the most prominent and consistent defenders of civil liberties in America” by Politico and “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer and one of its most distinguished defenders of individual rights” by Newsweek. Get Trump makes clear that unconstitutional efforts to stop Trump from retaking the presidency challenge the very foundations of our liberty: due process, right to counsel, and free speech.

Keep Kleenex nearby as you read about ordinary people exhibiting extraordinary kindness to a group of complete strangers on one of the most tragic days in history. If you want to be uplifted and encouraged, read this book and buy a ticket to Gander.
