Historia
Arcadia “Dia” Gannon has been obsessed with Louisiana Veda, the game designer whose obsessive creations and company, Darkly, have gained a cultlike following. Dia is shocked when she’s chosen for a highly-coveted internship, along with six other teenagers from around the world. Why her? Dia has never won anything in her life. Darkly, once a game-making empire renowned for its ingenious and utterly terrifying toys and games, now lies dormant after Veda’s mysterious death. The remaining games are priced like rare works of art, with some fetching millions of dollars at auction.

Pessl fans will love this, despite YA category
Revisado: 11-28-24
If you liked Special Topics and Night Film, you will love this one. I was hesitant after Neverworld, as it was a bit too YA for me. But this is Pessl at her best. This book has the expert narration of Special Projects and the complex background development of Night Film.
My only complaint is the narrator’s accents for certain characters.

Historia
The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

The most haunting thing is the adverbs
Revisado: 10-13-23
It’s easy it over write something, it’s hard to do it so consistently over and over. The one thing the listener doesn’t need is imagination, because the author tells you exactly what the characters are thinking, and sometimes what that are not thinking. Too many adverbs and purple prose.

Integrating Faulkner’s screenplays, fiction, and life, Rollyson argues that the novelist deserves to be reread not just as a literary figure but as a still-relevant force, especially in relation to issues of race, sexuality, and equality. The culmination of years of research in archives that have been largely ignored by previous biographers, The Life of William Faulkner offers a significant challenge and an essential contribution to Faulkner scholarship.

Revisado: 04-01-22
This is a Faulkner biography. One would think that the narrator would have researched the proper pronunciation of Faulkner novels and short stories etc. Not being able to pronounce Yoknapatawpha should automatically be disqualification

Detective Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD, but his half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, needs his help. With the secret help of his former LAPD partner, Lucia Soto, he turns the investigation inside the police department. But as Bosch gets closer to discovering the truth, he makes himself a target.

A great story that was not fully developed.
Revisado: 12-04-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This novel had a lot of potential. The complex plot is there, but the intricate detail and character development is not. For instance, the antagonists, the two rouge cops and the two call girl characters were underdeveloped. The reader gets some insight and early development early on, when the two are setting up Haller, but that’s about it. The principal antagonist is woefully undeveloped, especially when compared to Connelly’s other notable villain such as the Scarecrow and the Poet. Likewise, the two call girls were introduced, then put on the shelf, having served the plot purpose. There was a lot of story potential there. It seems as though Connelly outlined a dynamic plot then tried to get to each point as fast as he could. Overall, the novel leaves much to be desired.

Historia
Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

One of Iles best to date; but Dick Hill is missed
Revisado: 05-04-14
What did you love best about Natchez Burning?
This is perhaps one of Iles best works to date. The novel demonstrates Iles growth as a novelist. With this work, Iles blurs the line between best-selling commercial fiction and serous literature. This bridging of gaps is often present in some of Iles’s other novels but is often slanted more towards the commercial thriller genre. With Natchez Burning, Iles fuses the two producing a novel that can be appreciated literary critics and commercial fiction readers alike.
What didn’t you like about David Ledoux’s performance?
My main complaint about this audio book is the narration and, to be fair, it is not David Ledoux's fault. Ledoux did a great job; however, Dick Hill’s presence was missed. Listeners of Greg Iles audio books have become accustomed to Hill’s narration. This is especially true of the Penn Cage novels. From The Quiet Game to The Devil’s Punchbowl, Hill has narrated, and his voice has become the voices of the characters. Natchez Burning appears to be the last of Iles novels with Penn Cage as the main protagonist and it was a mistake to switch narrators here at the conclusion. It is like switching the lead actor in the last installment of a major motion picture trilogy. That being said, Ledoux did a good job, but I expect that the performance reviews will be impacted by listeners' disappointment with the substitution
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Historia
When Dismas Hardy agrees to clean up the caseload of recently disappeared attorney Charlie Bowen, he thinks it will be easy. But one of the cases is far from small-time - the appeal to overturn the murder conviction of National Guard reservist Evan Scholler, who has been sentenced to life without parole for the murder of an ex-Navy SEAL and private contractor named Ron Nolan. Two rapid-fire events in Iraq conspired to bring the men into fatal conflict.

Where is Dismas Hardy?
Revisado: 03-28-12
Any additional comments?
This book is alright, but as a Dismas Hardy book, it falls short. Why? Because Dismas Hardy is absent for the majority of the novel. As much as I like the Hardy series, I felt short changed, as though I was sold a mediocre novel in a Dismas Hardy package: keep listening, Dismas Hardy will make an appearance soon. By the time he did, I had forgotten I was expecting him.
