Historia
Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall were torn apart by the Jacobite Rising in 1746, and it took them 20 years to find each other again. Now the American Revolution threatens to do the same. It is 1779, and Claire and Jamie are at last reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their children on Fraser’s Ridge. Having the family together is a dream the Frasers had thought impossible.

Wonderful continuation of a beautiful story
Revisado: 10-02-22
I'm not sure the nay-sayers are listening to the same book I did.
Complaining about the religion in the story? The entire series has been about religions very old and newer. The paganism/druidism of the standing stones, the Church of England, and Catholicism - if James had taken the throne of Scotland, it would have been a Catholic country. Once they get to America, freedom of religion is front and center by adding Presbyterians, Quakers, and Methodists. Each very fervent in their beliefs and still able to get along for the most part.
Disappointed about the lack of action and bringing memories of prior books along? I enjoyed all the references to the past and there was plenty of new story lines to follow for all the various characters. Clare and Jamie deserve a breather at this time of their lives - not that they get much.
Mostly I just loved the descriptions of the colonies and culture and beautiful, unsullied landscapes - and the ongoing struggle for American freedom.

Historia
Sam Vimes is on a well-deserved holiday. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the muck - not to mention all that fresh air and birdsong - are more than a bit taxing on a cynical city-born and -bred copper. Yet a policeman will find a crime anywhere if he decides to look hard enough, and it’s not long before a body is discovered, and Sam - out of his jurisdiction, out of his element, and out of bacon sandwiches (thanks to his well-meaning wife) - must rely on his instincts, guile, and street smarts to see justice done.

Great to have the back story
Revisado: 10-30-16
too bad the reader was disappointing. Now I finally believe that Rutledge loved Jean. And I guess it's too much to ask for the same reader after so many books but it was distracting. Sounded either too pompous or reading for children. sometimes both. Still as a prequel , I would recommend.

Historia
Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Great book - Great performance
Revisado: 08-06-13
I loved this book, especially the writing. Short declarative incomplete sentences are so very masculine and Mr. Deakins did a great job of reading them. Seemed like you were hearing the main character's thoughts because people don't really think in complete sentences. The story kept moving, expecially through the first half of the book. However I did think that the author resorted to a very improbable plot line (trying not to spoil things here) in order to wrap things up. Regardless, I listened a second time and would definitely purchase a sequel.

Good story but not thrilled with the narrator
Revisado: 11-11-12
Would you be willing to try another one of Jay Snyder’s performances?
Mr. Snyder has a smooth voice, in fact I found it way too smooth and dramatic for my taste. I was always conscious that someone was reading and couldn't lose myself in the story. I kept thinking about the over the top deep-voiced narrators of action-flic trailers that are now parodied for other commercials.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was so happy to find a sci-fi series that I hadn't read yet and I am interested in the "world" that has been created by the author. I will listen to the next in the series and see if I can get over the narrator.

When they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead.

Narration kills a great book
Revisado: 02-10-08
I read this great book many years ago when it was first published and found it facinating. Ambrose's skill really broadened my reading experience and I have read many many historical books since because of it. I purchaed the audio version because I was planning to drive to Montana from Florida and I thought this book would be a fantastic counterpoint to my lengthy journey. Sad to say that the flat, droning, expressionless, uninspired (I could go on) narration ruined the book for me. Mr. Whitener is a reader from the very early days of "books-on-tape" and maybe I have been spoiled by the performances of Jim Dale, but I just couldn't listen to this book. Please try the sample before you buy this audiobook and know that what you hear is what you get - the same nasal tone and lack of emphasis throughout. If a better performer was to do this book over, I would buy it in a minute. I gave this one star because the book is really really great.
