Hilarious ideas and stories. I really love the way he puts things. The seriousness of the business world is placed in a lighter, comical interpretation that is closer to reality.

Although some of Joel's stories are familiar to me from listening to SXM Radio, this was still as good as new to my soul. Plus, in this book form, Joel rounds out his point in a way that is different than his preaching. Not a different point, just a different style that makes it understandable to me in a new way. I absolutely love the way Joel brings his message, and his message is always so encouraging and uplifting. It's exactly what I need. His words are the antidote to my negative thinking. He is a CBT expert and 12-Step sponsor gift-packaged in a Christian preacher. Keep going Joel! You save me from myself every day!

Gives a decent overview of estate planning

This is a generally good overview of what estate planning is. It has some good anecdotes to explain why good EP is important. In the end, I think you'll have a decent understanding of what it can do for you. Personally, I was hoping for more good stories to explain EP from a practical perspective. There definitely are some, but for me it wasn't enough. I felt the author was too busy trying to sell you the idea you need a lawyer (which you do) but that got in the way of more thorough explanations. Still, it does a good job, just not excellent. Finally, but very importantly, the reader is too robotic sounding and static-y, which makes it hard to listen to.

How would Capt. Kirk teach history?

If you like. The. Way. Captain Kirk speaks. With odd. Pauses. ... In places you'd least expect. Them. Then you'll love the. Way. This professor.... Speaks.
Personally, I found it hard to listen to based on that trait of his.

Also, this Prof swore he'd only present the facts, yet in too many lectures he apologized for history's treatment of women and slaves. I guess he thinks we ordinary folks can't draw our own conclusions from the facts and need him to tell us what was right or wrong.

Finally, he pretty clearly doesn't like Christianity.

Other than the above, many of the facts presented were interesting. A good synopsis of each time period. But if I could hear the same history from a different lecturer without the social justice warrior commentary, I'd trade this lecture for it in a heartbeat.

For me, it's more helpful than the original, Feeling Good, which was itself incredibly helpful already.

Really thought this was worthwhile! (I wish he hadn't strung is along with the vocal cords story for the whole book, but otherwise very enjoyable.) I may have actually learned a few things, too. The reader was excellent.

Great book for those dealing with depression!

I highly recommend this book if you struggle with depression. It is very helpful. Note, though, it'll take some work on your part, but it's well worth it.
Having read the Handbook first, and now having listened to this book, I actually recommend the Handbook version first. It forces you to do activities that will help you, whereas this book merely talks about it (in detail). I still liked this book, though, because it reminded me of everything I had done in the Handbook, which is about all I can do while I'm driving, anyhow. (Last I checked, the Handbook is not available in audio.)

The reader of this audio book is excellent. He actually sounds engaged, as though he's Dr. Burns himself, giving you the advice right then and there. Kudos to him. (My only pet peeve about him is he pronounces "often" as "off-ten." I was glad he didn't also say "soff-ten," "liss-ten," or "sall-mon.")

IMHO, you can skip the last 2-3 hours of this audio, which deals with antidepressant drugs. It's full of biology and chemistry lessons and lists of side-effects. He also talks ad nauseam about when or why to take drugs for depression. It's ad nauseam because his answer is always the same: therapy alone can work, or therapy plus drugs, but never drugs alone. Unfortunately he felt the need to say that over and over and over again.

What made the experience of listening to The Conservative Tradition the most enjoyable?

The lecturer is very good about pointing out the most important aspects and relating them to the topic. He sticks to his point and gets it across.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

Viewing history through a particular lens makes things more interesting. History in view of conservatism means you emphasize and recount certain facts that otherwise you may not have heard or picked up on.

Which character – as performed by Professor Patrick N. Allitt – was your favorite?

I found it particularly interesting to hear about the different opinions and political positions during the Civil War. Tidbits about Lincoln and others I had probably never heard before.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Margaret Thatcher. Her whole story is amazingly compelling.

Any additional comments?

One aspect I really appreciate about this presentation is that the professor does not sit in judgment on history. He doesn't claim to be "better" than people in the past. In fact, he doesn't present his own personal views at all. He is so matter-of-fact about everything that I have no idea what his personal views are. ... I thoroughly enjoyed this, even if there are a few sections that were less interesting to me. FYI, I played this at 1.3x speed because I wanted to get through it faster.

I enjoyed the scientific, historic and factual information about language presented here. Every chapter contained interesting info. However, the speaker likes to throw in tangential personal stories, unhelpful analogies, and quirky humor, all of which I found distracting from the main point. I really don't care about his favorite foods; I "get it" without some silly analogy that points more to the speaker than to the point; and if I want to ROTFL, I'll listen to a comedy, thank you. By contrast, I've listened to other presentations that actually make no efforts to be witty and I've been thoroughly enlightened without having to know a thing about the speaker's personal life or preferences. In fact, I learn more from them because I don't have to constantly redirect my focus from the subject to a silly analogy or joke and back to the subject again ... bracing myself for the next witticism. Other than THAT, great info here.

Crystal clear. No beating around the bush or unrelated personal tangents. Covers lots of territory, things I never thought of. Never boring, even for the boring topics. Highly recommend it.
