I read this a long time ago. It's still enjoyable. The reader is good. My only complaint then and now is that you get the feeling parts are missing.

Historia
As Storm Breaking opens, the western allies, led by Karal, Karsite Sunpriest and delegate to the Valdemaran Court, and the Adepts Firesong and An'desha, have traveled deep into the Dorisha Plains to locate the ancient ruins of the Tower of Urtho, Mage of Silence, creator of the gryphons. Legend has it that below the Tower, deeply buried beneath the plains, is Urtho's Vault, hidden stronghold of some of the most powerful magical weapons ever devised - weapons that Urtho himself felt were too dangerous to use.

too many loose ends
Revisado: 04-04-25
This series had too many subplots. Characters were brought in and dropped out depending upon chapter. Many were simple abandoned in this last book. What happened in the empire, Haldorn and more. A whole new country was brought in. They were in strict isolation since the cataclysm. The people were dedicated to the sunlord. So how did the Son of the Sun know the hand gestures and language? Throughout the series the emperor was portrayed as difficult to assassinate. Emphasis on his guards being geis bound and more. So how could a known assassin even with help casually stroll into the throne room and kill him. The narration was excellent.

I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

poor world building
Revisado: 01-15-25
I was entrigued with the plot idea. Our MC, must solve her murder. The reader does a good job. She kept my attention through out. The world building is poor. Supernaturals are known. They're kept semi isolated in the city. Why? Who established the policy? How was it enforced? With a large supernatural population, why only 1 officer? Why are vampires able to walk in the daytime? Why is such a comparatively young vampire (around 50 yo) the vampire lord? The story is set in London, England. So why so many US idioms. example...this isn't my first rodeo. Our MC wakes up in morgue as a Jane Doe possible murder victim. There's computers, cell phones, computer video monitoring. Fingerprints are mentioned. So why weren't her fingerprints taken? The MC's mentor is discoverec murdered. Apparently someone climbed up 4 stories to acess his hotel room. This is a city with known supernatural population. So why were the windows able to be opened? Even an idiot let alone an officer experienced with working with supes would have plugged that entrance. If the author, editorss had paid attention these holes would've been been filled or explainec away in book. It took me a months to get over these and more annoyances and finish book.

drags a lot
Revisado: 01-15-25
The reader as usual does an excellent job. The story was interesting. But it kept getting bogged down with subplots being so similiar as to seem reduntant. I wish some of that could've been used to explain some of the world this book is in. It's stated that anotherrace governs Canada.Whay? How was the world divided? Human mages were present. So were there any others, vampires, weres, etc? Spoiler...when Dragon Swat shows up, none of the characters knew anything about their existance. That includes the human SWAT team leader. He should have been aware of generalities if not details. The steel dragon had a near overdose of survivors guilt. Then boom she suddenly gets over it. The Dragon Swat were aware that the primary villian took the job of teaching the steel dragon the ropes of being a dragon. They were aware of his past. Yet they calmly ignored this until he nearly killed the MC. The ending also seemed kinda dumb. Our steel dragon spent the entire book; my human friends, my human team, my family, my city of humans. I must protect them at all costs. Some of those many, many costs nearly cost her, her life. Then at the last few pages she sedately goes off with the Dragon Swat. That annoyed me

Historia
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

good story
Revisado: 12-25-24
I wondered about a few things. Most of the time MC is very careful, plans ahead. Then he does things that are to dumb to understand. Spoiler: he knows a group is trying to kill him. They're using automatic weapons, gernade launchers and more. He admits that the group seems to have lots of money. They've attacked his home once. So why does he continue to live there? There's a rape scene where he ensures the victim doesn't get pregnant. Then a short time later he has sex with a willing partner. She gets pregnant. Where was that intervention? The novel has intervals of being slow and tedious. My attention would wander, then I'd have to go back to find what I missed. I liked this version of vampires. I wish a bit more of the 24+ hours was spent on world building. In one part there's Mother Sun and Father Earth. In another this is reversed. In another neither. Adding to the confusion is on some occasions the MC sleeps. Then he finds himself apparently in the mind of his arch nemisis. MC doesn't do anything. Some of the twists in plot is like a tangled ball of string. You can try to untangle or ignore it. The reader does a good job. He kept my interest even in the most tedious parts.

Revisado: 11-23-24
I love most of books byTamora Pierce. I especially loke this series. The Full Cast mesh together well. This plot felt rushed. The why, how and who imprissioned the Immortals into the Realm of the Gods was not covered. It wasn't covered why the gods allowed this.

nearly identical w another Hambly novel
Revisado: 10-18-24
Struggled to finish. If you have Ms Hambly's Scandal in Babylon then don't get this. These two books are nearly identical! The main difference is that the occult element present here. I realized the plot and character names especially the dogs were nearly identical to that book. This made this book too predictible and a struggle to finish. I do not know which novel came first. I enjoyed Scandal better.

just don't like
Revisado: 05-24-24
I enjoyed most of books in first seriee. A few common sense things should have been covered. I especially didn't like the flying without a saddle or harness. She knew that going into military meant using a saddle. Gear, supplies etc needs securing. So why didn't the two of them practice this? She knew (or should have) her dargon have made headway on this mental/emotional hangup. A brief sentence would have covered this. Why waste the space here? Raven's childhood best friend Henry was well on his way to being an excellent healer. So why does series two begin w him talking about starting a joke shop? Why was her 'frenemy' only givena few sentences. As book progressed I found ta lot of discrepancies. I just couldn't get into it. I also couldn't understand why her grandfather or headmaster (both retiredmilitary) didn' prepare her for military life Especially the resentment and hostility normal and precipitated by her family and reputation. Had this book for a few years before listening to full book. No planso future purchases in this series.

boring and a waste of a credit.
Revisado: 05-06-24
Thought this was a continuation of characterx from first 3 books. It's not! The plot was too predictable from first chapter. 'Finished' it by skipping several chapter. Anyone who has read other books will see obvious 'snips, cuts and minimal disguising' of many characters. The open ending guarentees no futher books in this series for me. The reader does a fair job. I enjoyed her reading even though I disliked the book.
