Historia
Award-winning journalist and CNN correspondent Elle Reeve was not surprised by the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. With years of in-depth research and on-the-ground investigative reporting under her belt, Reeve was aware of the preoccupations of the online far right and their journey from the computer to QAnon, militias, and racist groups. At the same time, Reeve saw a parallel growth of counterforces, with citizen vigilantes using new tools and tactics to take down the far right.

Superb series of interviews
Revisado: 04-19-25
Reeve has immersed herself in right wing culture. Her skill as an interviewer comes partly from listening closely to her subjects yet still retaining some distance. She is fearless too in challenging loud, angry, and sometimes dangerous people. And she walks away with a story.

Historia
In 2007, a short blogpost by Gawker Media outed PayPal founder and billionaire investor Peter Thiel as gay. Thiel's sexuality had been known to close friends and family, but he didn't consider himself a public figure, and believed the information was private. This post would be the casus belli for a meticulously plotted conspiracy that would end nearly a decade later with a $140 million dollar judgment against Gawker and its bankruptcy. Only later would the world learn that Gawker's demise was not incidental - it had been masterminded by Thiel.

Fascinating and unusual book
Revisado: 08-16-24
Can conspiracies be good? Holiday argues yes and walks us through one the more famous recent conspiracies step by step and with analysis and insights from history.
I always prefer books read by the author and this is no exception. But holiday does tend to speaking in a slightly halting style, over emphasizing some words in each sentence. And there was a cold or allergies through the middle part of the book. All the same, overall excellent and surprising book. And I am still glad he read it himself.

Historia
When Amitav Ghosh began the research for his monumental cycle of novels the Ibis trilogy ten years ago, he was startled to learn how the lives of the nineteenth-century sailors and soldiers he wrote about were dictated not only by the currents of the Indian Ocean but also by the precious commodity carried in enormous quantities on those currents: opium. Most surprising of all, however, was the discovery that his own identity and family history were swept up in the story. Smoke and Ashes is at once a travelogue, a memoir, and an essay in history, drawing on decades of archival research.

Not sure what others are not liking. I am super fussy about narrators too.
Good pacing and emotive but not overdone at all.

Quite a mix of gripping and a little confusing. I prefer some of Ghosh’s more recent work. But very glad I listened to this.

Historia
With temperatures rising and the risk of disasters growing, our world is increasingly vulnerable. Most people see disasters as freak, natural events that are unpredictable and unpreventable. But that simply isn’t the case - disasters are avoidable, but when they do strike, there are strategic ways to manage the fallout.

Revisado: 08-13-23
In the age of climate change and regular disasters its well worth knowing how to deal with disasters.
Professor Montano has written an authoritative, thought provoking and fascinating introduction to “disasterology.” Important and readable!

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Historia
Consider this: Five of the most expensive hurricanes in history have made landfall since 2005: Katrina ($160 billion), Ike ($40 billion), Sandy ($72 billion), Harvey ($125 billion), and Maria ($90 billion). With more property than ever in harm’s way, and the planet and oceans warming dangerously, it won’t be long before we see a $250 billion hurricane. Why? Because Americans have built $3 trillion worth of property in some of the riskiest places on earth: barrier islands and coastal floodplains.

Like the family history by you father’s uncle
Revisado: 07-20-20
This book is inexplicably tedious. Way too much detail without it being clear what the story is.
The narrator is working hard to inject something compelling into a list of real estate transactions and dull personal anecdotes. But he is just making me more aware if how dull the book is.
Hoping the water section is more compelling.
