Mother and warrior. Scholar and spy. Rebel and hero. Set in a magical world of terror and wonder, this novel is a deeply felt epic of courage and war, in which the fates of these characters intertwine - and where ordinary people become heroes, and their lives become legend.

terrible narration
Revisado: 08-13-24
I loved reading this book years ago. thought I would listen to it. I was wrong. this was the first book I asked to return. only made it about an hour before I gave up. the woman narrator was so quiet and mumbled so much I could not understand her. especially when she tried with a German accent. I tried to listen on several devices and different headphones to no avail. I love luke as a narrator, but even his performance in this was sub par. maybe it gets better further in, but I just couldn't make it very far. what's the point when you can't understand what is being said. and there are a lot of strange words in this book due to the setting, so it's not like I could interpret or guess at words.
that being said, the story is great, highly recommend picking up the book to read!

Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

funny and satisfying!
Revisado: 06-14-24
the reviews about being to political or pushing atheism to much made me hesitate. but I took the chance and really enjoyed the it! it's political in story way to advance the plot, and the atheism works well in a world full of gods. both make for very funny interactions and conversations! not stat heavy.
A con for me were the many odd and different character names that left me trying to remember where the were from earlier in the story. but that wasn't really that bad because the author usually threw in a reference for the last interaction.

After battling creatures of the void in the Voidmare Dungeon, Astrid fused with her new Class—Voidmare. It answered some questions about her Awakening but left her with many more. With monsters, corrupt nobles, and pirates conspiring against Astrid’s home ship HMS Rebirth, she heads out onto the great oceans in search of greater strength to weather the coming storms. Astrid finds herself in a new world, where she meets a strange, psychotic tribe of people who want nothing more than to have their eyes ripped from their skulls.

terrible narrator
Revisado: 05-17-24
I love the story. but the narrator ruins it. between the odd pauses, the mispronounced words, the random background noise (airplanes or semi trucks not sure. plus other noises). when the next book comes out I'll purchase it to read it personally if they use the same narrator. I will not listen to any other book narrated by this person.

Historia
Felix had risked everything to stop the threat of the Unending Maw. Except instead of death, he and his Companion Pit were transported to the deadly Void, a place far worse than the Foglands. The Maw is there with them, bonded somehow to Felix in a way none of them understand, but all of them hate. The three must navigate the desolate expanse of the dark Void, contending with voidbeasts, marauders, and the creeping influence of the Maw itself. It will take everything that Felix has—and more—merely to survive, let alone escape. All choices have consequences.

Historia
Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate. Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication.

Revisado: 04-30-24
the first few hours were VERY stat heavy. I would skip foward 3-4 minutes and it would still be rattling off stats. I put it on at work and didn't care that I zoned out from it for a while only to be lost when I payed attention again.
HOWEVER
Thankfully that decreased significantly. with that droll finally done I could focus on the story. and I throughly enjoyed it! I will get the next book and hope it continues as well as it finished!

Historia
For more than 150 years I've served the Kingdom of Sena. Through four Kings and a Queen. Two wars and a rebellion. I've founded and taught at a magic school. I've fought against beast waves and dungeon breaks. But now? Now, the one close friend I had left has passed. So, I'm done with their politics and their economics. The short and busy lives of humans are more burden than benefit on the weary soul of this half-elf.

well written, excellent narration!
Revisado: 04-25-24
95% of the books kept me captivated not wanting to stop, a few parts I zoned out from. some parts were so well written and narrated I couldn't stop laughing, and at times crying. the interlude before chapter 20 in book 3 left me bawling and filled with such love and sorrow! I love when a story can move me so much!

Great story, odd narration
Revisado: 04-10-24
Loved the story! The narrator was great, yet only okay. She had great lilt and energy, she enunciated everything perfectly, and she portrayed emotions in her voice better than 99% of other narrators I've heard. But the amount of random pauses and the random mispronounced words were off-putting. Not bad enough that it made me want to stop. But if the story was not so good, I wouldn't consider getting the next book. but I am definitely getting the next book!

Historia
Enemies emerge everywhere. Stagnation starts seeming standard. Results require Ruthlessness. Joe has been moving deeper into his study of ritual magic and further away from his combat team. He's learning more and more, but more often than not needs to choose between his research and squad leadership. Improving the town is a huge help to the guild, and they have been pushing to increase their power. Their rapid increases have not gone unnoticed. The guild receives an ultimatum, delivered by assassins and signed with blood.

Historia
Some people just knew how to go out in style. Tim had never been one of those guys. Tim was always a planner. The plan was to get into college, graduate, and find a well-paying job. That plan was coming together nicely until he saw a presentation to get paid to play The Etheric Coast. At his graduation ceremony. After watching the company's employee recruitment video, Big Richie's words had a whole new meaning. He could spend his life going from a cubicle at work to a one-bedroom apartment and back again...or enter a virtual world of unlimited possibilities.

a great story!
Revisado: 01-12-24
the story took a while to get really interesting, but well worth the wait/build up! the amount of movie quotes sprinkled into dialog was so fun! can't wait to start the next one! the narrator left a bit to be desired, wish he could have done a bit more variance with each character he was talking for. but he was passable and I learned to figure it out quickly.
