MC is frustrating and wasteful

The MC (by my count) has 8 potions that give attributes, 7 skill books that give 50 lvls to any skill, and a magic building he has yet to use. why hasn't he made any of his people more powerful? why is he just sitting on a bunch of power when he is literally facing the end of his holding? he is not dumb his intelligence stat is higher than most other people but he is so focused on feeling sorry for himself that he lets his enemies get stronger and stronger until he is forced into a stupid situation where his people bare the cost.

Although I love the world of The Grand Game, Michael's story is progressing at a snails pace. I feel that either the books should be longer or less time should be spent on side quest.
