Historia
In The Bughouse Affair, this first of a new series of lighthearted historical mysteries set in 1890s San Francisco, former Pinkerton operative Sabina Carpenter and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, undertake what initially appear to be two unrelated investigations. Sabina's case involves the hunt for a ruthless lady "dip" who uses fiendish means to relieve her victims of their valuables at Chutes Amusement Park and other crowded places. Quincannon, meanwhile, is after a slippery housebreaker who targets the homes of wealthy residents.

So glad it’s over.
Revisado: 12-13-24
Not the worst book I’ve ever listened to, but certainly not a good one. A predictable and easy to solve mystery, one dimensional characters, and poor narration made the end of this book a welcomed event. Ii will not continue the series and do not recommend this book.

Historia
Single mom Hayley Powell is barely keeping her leaking roof over her head in Bar Harbor, Maine, when her boss at the Island Times gives her a new assignment - taking over the paper's food column. Hayley's not sure she has the chops - she's an office manager, not a writer, even if her friends clamor for her mouth-watering potluck dishes. But the extra income is tempting, and Hayley's chatty first column is suddenly on everyone's menu - with one exception.

I won’t be continuing this series
Revisado: 10-23-23
The setting and characters are generally adequate, but I am not a fan of mysteries that leave me shaking my head and grumbling at the main character because of their repeated utter stupidity. I really enjoy “cozy” mysteries, and good ones can be clever and well thought out without being overly suspenseful, gory or dark. This one is neither clever nor well thought out. There were so many times I wanted to shout at the main character when she always chose the dumbest and most dangerous move for absolutely no reason. Maybe the series gets better in later books, but I won’t be finding out.

Historia
Siobhán O'Sullivan's hopes for a quiet Irish Christmas are dashed when the local Santa turns up dead in a carnival dunk tank of hot cocoa. Now instead of hunting down holiday gifts, she's pursuing a heartless killer. Seems the dead Santa was no angel either, stealing neighborhood dogs to guide his sleigh. But was it his holiday antics - or worse - that led to his death by chocolate?

Should be Book 2.5 in the Series
Revisado: 12-22-21
This is a shorter story in the wonderful Irish Village series. Audible has it listed as book 3.5 (maybe due to publication date), but it actually fits between books 2 and 3 in the series timeline. Though the narrator is fine, she definitely does not have the Irish brogue that the usual narrator does and it takes away some of the charm of the listen. A good story, but not my favorite in the series, mainly because of the narration.

Historia
Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brené Brown offers a powerful new vision that encourages us to dare greatly: to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly, and to courageously engage in our lives. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on 12 years of research, her book argues that vulnerability is not weakness but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection.

Performance was torturous
Revisado: 10-20-13
What other book might you compare Daring Greatly to and why?
I love Brene Brown, but I preferred The Gift of Imperfection to Daring Greatly. I thought it had more depth and was more solution based. I feel like Daring Greatly is the book that her publishers forced her to write as she became more popular, without giving her time to explore and research other areas to discuss. Many of her stories and revelations are found in her other works. That being said, I think it is full of good information and most people will get something out it (especially if they haven't read her other books).
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was HORRIBLE. I have listened to many, many audible books and I believe this is the worst performance I've ever heard. At first, I thought it was because I was used to hearing the author's voice from other books, but then I realized this was just an incredibly bad choice for a narrator (or the director led her down the wrong road). She is overly emotional, emphasizes the wrong work in the sentence and totally misses most of the jokes in the book. I have listened to or read several other books by this author, so I know she is sarcastic and very funny. The narrator reads the jokes and witty remarks without realizing what they are. Having heard some of the stories in other books, I know how they were supposed to be read and she totally mangles them. I found myself frequently hitting my hands on the steering wheel in exasperation over how a narrator could ruin a book so thoroughly. I would recommend READING this book instead.
Do you think Daring Greatly needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, but only when she has done additional research and has NEW information to share.
Any additional comments?
I wanted to like this book so badly, but the narrator just made me count down the minutes until it was over. I really wish Brene Brown would re-record this book and I'd try it again.
