Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Propaganda for a discredited and damaging treatment for gender non-conforming youth
Revisado: 05-04-24
Jodi Picoult is an engaging writer but she misused her talent to push discredited information. She pushes the false narrative that surgery prevents suicide. She pushes a medical trajectory of puberty blockers and wrong sex hormones which causes permanent damage to a healthy body on children who are distressed about gender. The deep dives into pediatric gender medicine shows most who show up in distress will adjust to their own sexed bodies if supported emotionally, allowed to go through puberty normally, allowed to be gender non-conforming but not socially transitioned, and given therapy for other problems which are often the genesis of the distress. Statistics show the majority of these children not medicalized become healthy gay and Lesbian adults. The Cass report, after four years of research concluded that the gender treatment for children portrayed in this book has no evidence of effectiveness for these children and many suffer from harmful effects such as sterility, bone problems, brain development, the ability to have sexual pleasure and orgasms, menopausal symptoms, and even tumors. Surgeries have a high rate of complications and have even caused deaths. As a result this treatment is being discontinued in the UK. Similar findings were made earlier in several Scandinavian countries. The story of a youngster in this book portrayed as trans is not merely fictional but misrepresents The realities of gender distressed youth in favor of a popular ideology put forth by an adult movement. The book is an argument for a particular ideology, many elements of which have been discredited by science. When a novel crosses the line into ideological argument over a story that tells something of the human condition it is no longer literary fiction but rather propaganda. Since good medical care is particularly important for this population, pushing discredited information renders this book potentially harmful. I would recommend reading nonfiction such as A Time to Think or Dr. Cass' report itself to learn more about these important issues.

Historia
Considered one of Sweden's greatest 20th century writers, Vilhelm Moberg created Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson to portray the joys and tragedies of daily life for early Swedish pioneers in America. His consistently faithful depiction of these humble people's lives is a major strength of the Emigrant Novels.

All we didn't know about where so many of us came from!
Revisado: 01-30-24
as a person of Scandinavian descent, I was particularly taken with a novel. it was well written and taught me so much about the situation of those who immigrated from Sweden to the US in the 19th century. the book is amusing and the characters are well drawn. the history I learned about the oppressive and authoritarian lifestyle of farmers and peasants in 1850 Sweden gave me a far deeper understanding of why one and eight chose to immigrate and the attractions that the US held for those who came. I did think the male author emphasized certain sexual issues beyond his understanding.

A Real Find! One of my favorites this year
Revisado: 09-30-21
This is quite an amazing mixture of humor, musings on life, being an American Jew, Norwegian culture, war, aging, disguised as a bit of a thriller. it is original. Has some great characters. I kept wanting to hear more. The only problem for me was the Canadian accent of the narrator didn't seem right for a story about an American Jew in Norway. I am recommending this to all my friends.

One of the most engrossing audiobooks on my list
Revisado: 03-28-21
While there is many a book I can't stop reading, this is the audiobook I had to keep listening to. The narrator's are excellent, the story is engrossing, and the technique of developing the plot through using different characters and setting the story both before and after a central murder builds the plot and your empathy with all the different major characters. I also like that there are both male and female characters who are major actors,. I didn't feel left out .

Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

A Must Read for those who are aging
Revisado: 12-03-14
Would you listen to Being Mortal again? Why?
Yes, it had so many thoughtful points to make about assessing what is important to our living at any age.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Being Mortal?
I think the questions he learns to ask about what is important to life are key to thinking about my life even though I am not yet frail.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It touched me as I thought of loved ones who have gone through the process of losing various abilities and made me ponder what might have been done to improve their lives, as well as made me think about my own.
Any additional comments?
He raises the key question about what makes life worth living and reminds us to apply that to those whose lives are limited by disabilities, especially the disabilities that come with illness and disability. He turns us away from thinking about life as a merely biological event but rather as an ultimately (although he doesn't use these words) spiritual and relational endeavor.

Great Performances --- Creative Character
Revisado: 08-07-11
Although the premise of the book sounds morbid, it is an interesting and ultimately redemptive book. It is told in the voice of a 5 year old with other characters being voiced in this recording as well.(as other characters with different readers). What is particularly interesting and creative about this book is the way it imagines a young character trying to make sense of a limited world and what lies outside it. Its orignilality and warmth make it a wonderful experience, and the readers are excellent.

A poignant look at a family and their homeland
Revisado: 03-30-10
The wonderful writer, Edwina Dandicat, recounts her life and the life of her family, particularly the Haitian uncle with whom she spent her early childhood. I listened to this just as the recent earthquake and its devastation was being broadcast on all the media and it gave me a human context to the recent history, the land, and its people. However, beyond that, it is a powerful memoir of a family, their love, their courage, and the ties that bind. I enjoyed the reading very much. It enhanced the story.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

excellent performances
Revisado: 02-08-10
While I greatly enjoyed this book and found it an interesting reminder of conditions in our country not so long ago, I thought that the readers on this recording made it particularly outstanding. The variety of voices and the acting made this feel almost like watching a very engrossing theater performance. It was hard to stop listening!
