Historia
A breakneck race against time…and an implacable enemy. An anonymous young woman murdered in a run-down hotel, all identifying characteristics dissolved by acid. A father publicly beheaded in the blistering heat of a Saudi Arabian public square. A notorious Syrian biotech expert found eyeless in a Damascus junkyard. Smoldering human remains on a remote mountainside in Afghanistan. A flawless plot to commit an appalling crime against humanity. One path links them all, and only one man can make the journey. Pilgrim.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-10-24
I thought it was cliche and very white guy. Hero epos. Not to my taste. Also the narrator needs a course in speaking different dialects. I suggest he listens to Killing Eve.

Historia
Embodiment is not an easy business. From violence to illness, sexuality to racism, the fact of a body can be impossibly hard to inhabit. Olivia Laing draws on her own background in protest and alternative medicine to investigate the reasons why. Laing’s exploration of the complexities of bodily life takes in some of the most significant and beguiling figures of the past century, among them the psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, the painters Francis Bacon and Agnes Martin and the singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Too much drama
Revisado: 12-10-12
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
So many characters, so fast. I had no time to process them all before the story enfolded. But what disturbed me was that all of them were horrible. Not one I could sympathize with. That made it very hard to keep listening. The drama was so overwhelming that it was annoying instead of dark. Compared to for instance Denise Mina, where you can relate to some characters eventhough their lives are hard and tough two, Rowling didn't give me enough branches to cling onto.
Part four was the best part. The story really took a nice turn. But than it went on being all drama and no relief

Wonderfully subtle
Revisado: 07-15-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I already recommended it to about three women. It is written very feminine, soft and subtle. The story is like those Columbo tv serie-movies. You know who did it but the thrilling part lays in the finding out how they will be discovered.
The characters are deep and gradually you get to know them better. You understand why the murder happened.
The detective Alex Morrow is a very smart lady, so as a female reader I could relate to her.
What other book might you compare The End of the Wasp Season to and why?
I've never read anything quite like this. It was so subtle I rewinded some parts to really grasp the story and the characters. Wonderful.
What does Jane McFarlan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her genuine Scottish accent makes it very real to listen to. Besides she narrated it very good and pulled me right into the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The entire atmosphere of the book pulled me in. I wanted to keep listening, I felt everything, I saw it before me. But mostly I enjoyed the fact that Denise Mina thinks her readers are smart people and that she doesn't explain everything. We as readers have to work two, to really read between the lines. Without making it too hard.

Predictable
Revisado: 06-26-12
What disappointed you about The Testament?
From a feminist point of view it was very poor writing. The women in the book were either sluts or the virgin Mary. The characters in the entire story were not believable. And the entire story was too predictable. I thought something interesting could happen, a twist, a secret the missionary woman had, that would spin the story. But that wasn't the case. So it was disappointing.
What was most disappointing about John Grisham’s story?
the characters were too flat and one-dimensional
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Frank Muller?
Another narrator is necessary. Only the beginning were he narrated as the old man, was good. The rest was annoying. He ended every sentence in the same whispery tone.
What character would you cut from The Testament?
The only character I thought was slightly ok, was Josh.
