Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Great storytelling.

Really enjoyed the story. It was cathartic as well; I also just lost a parent to cancer.

Historia
With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century.

Just as sweet as I remembered

I grew up on the films and read the book and a young girl. It was great to revisit decades later, and Rachel McAdams was the perfect reader.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Caste makes sense of our dysfunctional world
Revisado: 09-10-20
I am white and was raised Mormon. This book not only helped me better understand the current (and historic) state of things in the US, but also helped me to better understand the community of my upbringing. It broadened my understanding of "imposter syndrome," a much discussed concept (especially among women). Most importantly, it deepened my comprehension of the privilege I was born to and the oppression experienced by too, too many -- particularly people of color. Wilkerson's truth telling is powerful and painful and compelling. Her message didn't make me feel particularly optimistic, but how I feel is not the point. What will I do to challenge caste constraints? That - resistance - is the point.

Historia
Born and raised in a tight-knit Orthodox Jewish family, Tova Mirvis committed herself to observing the rules and rituals prescribed by this way of life. After all, to observe was to be accepted and to be accepted was to be loved. She married a man from within the fold and quickly began a family. But over the years, her doubts became noisier than her faith, and at age 40 she could no longer breathe in what had become a suffocating existence.

There are many ways to be
Revisado: 11-23-19
It's hard for me to put into words how this book made me feel. Essentially, less alone. <3
I was also raised in an orthodox religion (though not Jewish), I also spent my young adulthood trying to piece together the puzzle of being a strong, educated feminist in a patriarchal faith community -- convinced that I could. And, ultimately, I also left. But of course leaving is not that simple. As Tova says -- you leave again, and again.
I love the way Tova captures the pain and challenge and excitement of straddling two worlds and two selves in the journey towards authenticity.

So funny, so interesting. I listened to this during my commutes and never wanted to turn the car off when I arrived at each destination. Finished in days and can't wait to share with others.
