I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

binge listenable
Revisado: 02-17-25
I am so glad I gave this series a try. I just binge listened to every book in this series and I am going to figure out what is the beginning of another of this author's series.
Sweet, unexpected love is found by two people.
No spice except for a few racy jokes and they were minimal. Some stronger language, but also minimal

Romance can be a little complicated when you get sucked into a wormhole. Just ask high school English teacher June Flint. One little solar flare happens and suddenly you find yourself 85 years in the future. Eighty-five years from your dream job. Your ailing mother whose only companion in this world is you. Your favorite stuffed-crust pizza from DeLucia’s on Sunday nights. But when June’s cell phone inexplicably picks up a signal, she’s able to call back to the present—more specifically, four weeks before she accidentally time traveled.

well written and sweet
Revisado: 02-15-25
I always love when I discover a new author I really like.
Smartly put together romance, characters I really liked handing out with, no spice, even a touch of science fiction, one of my favorite genres.
There was good tension and NO contrived misunderstandings!
I am so glad I found this book. A pick-me-up story right when I needed a story with a happy ending. And a happy ending that was well earned.
At the end the author even left a tantalizing possibility of a series based around the wormhole event. I am going to see what else this author has written and watch for any new publications

One of my go to authors when I need to smile
Revisado: 12-31-24
His main characters start out with a tangle of problems and by the end of the story the solution is a cleverly woven solution.
Witty writing that reminds me of how Terry Pratchett wrote, but in a different style. I found PG Wodehouse's works as a teenager a few decades ago and I still turn to his writing when I need a lighthearted book to lift my spirits.

Historia
A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

great story, more f-bombs than I would like
Revisado: 12-14-24
The protagonist, Nate, has his own overarching story and he guides his newest client of the rules of a great best man speech with vignettes of how he helped his previous clients.
I love the layers of stories and the heart that shines through as I got to know Nate and his newest client Dan and all the people in Nate's life.
I could have done with less cussing. It showed up later in the story when I was already invested in the characters or I would have dropped the book early on.

Hal Clement does not disappoint
Revisado: 11-25-24
I first found this author in the 80's at a garage sale. The book was called Ice Planet. I enjoyed it, but as a middle schooler, I didn't think to find any more of his books. Years later a friend lent me his copy of A Mission of Gravity and I realized I loved how this author wrote. I love his approach to science fiction, it is science, just a few steps into the future.

Repeating knowledge in an engaging manner
Revisado: 07-28-24
I liked how this series of lectures was put together. Knowledge is given, examples are given and the information is repeated in a way that reminds me and engages me at the same time. I found it easy to follow along and I can see myself recalling the information given in this class years later when I am in a situation where I would need to remember what I learned here.

A window is but a piece of glass through which we view the world outside. It is not meant to distort. It is not intended to do anything but show us things as they are. At Oxford, though, there is a very particular window that reveals a very particular view. It is a view that defies all laws of nature and science. And when a detective is called in to investigate, he is startled to find that view opens a window into his own life–and a mystery he has never been able to solve.

Delightful nugget of a story
Revisado: 04-24-24
It was a quick listen but I was impressed by how much could be done in such a small amount of time. I will be filing this title under "read again"! There are not many mysteries I listen to more than once, but this is going to be one of them.

I am so glad this book was recommended to me
Revisado: 01-09-24
In some books I read, I want to yell at the characters for their choices. But in this book I would say to myself, "Why didn't you do <this>?" and then realize that I would have struggled just as much as the character did and likely act the same way. I am a timid person, less so as I grew up, but I remember what it was like to be bullied, to be alone, to be on the edges of society of school life in middle school/junior high. There are still times where I think something that I should say aloud, but the words don't come out. (And sometimes say something out loud that I should have kept to myself. Sigh.)
I love the slow growing of friendship and confidence. I felt each character's struggle in their life. The author helped me understand the characters' choices and reactions. Even if some of what the author has written is from life experience, she has also done her research! Each character was unique in her or his struggles and, in the end, someone I cared about and rooted for. I even understood and had sympathy for a lot of the people who were a source of the main characters' problems. They are imperfect too and have their struggles. Well, there was one character who I straight out despised. He can take a long walk off a short pier and get eaten by a sea monster.
It will be a book I return to. It is a book that encourages pondering and discussion. I am glad I was recommended it.
The reader helped immerse me in the story. Her voice acting through her reading added to the story and brought the right level of emotion to the more powerful scenes.

Revisado: 08-31-23
I rarely read horror and don't have a strong enough stomach for horror movies so I am glad I found this author.
I love the mundane set up. An annoying, boring job, annoying co-workers. All very normal. I could tell the main character was a young adult, disaffected and a bit lost in her life. At first, I was wondering when the horror part of the story would start, and it creeped up on me! I am definitely checking out this author's other books.
