In the 10th century BC, the new Queen of Sheba has inherited her father's throne and all its riches at great personal cost. Her realm stretches west across the Red Sea into land wealthy in gold, frankincense, and spices. But now, new alliances to the North threaten the trade routes that are the lifeblood of her nation. Solomon, the brash new king of Israel famous for his wealth and wisdom, will not be denied the tribute of the world - or of Sheba's queen.

Imaginative in the weaving of legends and what little facts we have of an ancient land. Beautifully written in a thread of love and forgiveness. Expertly narrated in such a mesmerizing manner it will beg you to listen again.

Historia
In the tumultuous world of ancient Israel, Ahinoam—a dagger-wielding Kenite woman—flees her family farm with her unconventional father to join the ragtag band of misfits led by the shepherd-turned-warrior David ben Jesse. As King Saul's treasonous accusations echo through the land, Ahinoam's conviction that David's anointing makes him Yahweh's chosen king propels her on a perilous journey to Moab and back into Judah's unforgiving wilderness, only to encounter more hardship and betrayal.

Revisado: 03-03-25
The story is nice but has more embellishment than I had anticipated. When listening to the audio it’s easy to get confused as to who is speaking. Both David and Nomi speak in first person but the tone of the narrator’s voice doesn’t change. Maybe, consider having two narrators when the story is told from a dual point of view.

Oh my, this is fiction, yet it could so easily be reality. All the elements of humanity are are clearly shown in this story of love, mercy, grace, and redemption.

Historia
In Harvest of Gold, the scribe Sarah married Darius, and at times, she feels as if she has married the Persian aristocracy, too. There is another point she did not count on in her marriage—Sarah has grown to love her husband. Sarah has wealth, property, honor, and power, but her husband’s love still seems unattainable. Although his mother was an Israelite, Darius remains skeptical that his Jewish wife is the right choice for him, particularly when she conspires with her cousin Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

These are two of the best books I’ve ever read. Are there names and places difficult? For an English speaker, yes. Does it change the depth of the love or the intrigue of the story? No!

And along the way, she changes the world. But before she was Lydia, the seller of purple, she was simply a merchant's daughter who loved three things: her father, her ancestral home, and making dye. Then unbearable betrayal robs her of nearly everything.

To be loved
Revisado: 02-08-25
Spoiler alert: my reason for reducing the rating is based on a desire not to pander to HEA love stories.
Does a need for love necessarily call for flesh and blood? I have never considered that Lydia may have had a romantic interest.
I know at times we all need to know we are accepted by other humans. I just wish that we could have seen this one woman be a great business woman and instrumental in the early church without falling into the trap of wanting to see her settled with a husband.
Understand a huge part of what made her special is that she is NOT married. She is one of the precious few examples that some women have. SOMETIMES being wife and mother only to the church is your only role. I feel like the ending destroyed a very good read.

Imagine what your life would be if…
This book takes characters of whom we know little and turns their lives into a believable story. What if the trajectory of your life were altered by one small act? Add or remove grace from that act and you might just find you are living within the pages of this book.

Raised as an orphan by her aunt, Chariline has only been told a few pieces of her parents’ tragic love story. Her beautiful dark skin is proof that her father was Cushite, but she knows nothing else. While visiting her grandfather before his retirement as the Roman official in the queen’s court, Chariline overhears that her father is still alive, and discovering his identity becomes her obsession. Both her grandfather and the queen have reasons for keeping this secret, however, and forbid her quest. So Chariline sneaks on the ship of a merchant trusted by friends.

Slow, stick with it
Revisado: 02-04-25
While the story is slow, it has a beautiful end. It is heavy with scripture and leans into description of cultural differences in many places a little too much. I gave this book 3 stars because I felt as though I was in the weeds, so to speak, more than necessary. The take away is … beautiful end.

Grace
Revisado: 01-29-25
Ordinary grace, awful grace, grace that surpasses human understanding is difficult to express in words. Krueger has done that masterfully as he weaves events and shares a story that would shape the lives of a young boy, his family, and their community.

Thus New York City, and the groundbreaking alienist Dr. Kreizler himself, are seen anew. It is June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline.
