Probably my favorite take on time travel fiction

I stumbled across these books by accident. I love time travel fiction and decided to take a shot with this Omnibus package after reading the title and synopsis of the first book ‘The Unusual Second Life of Thomas Weaver”.

That story hooked me really good, and it followed up well with the second book about Michael Hollister. The Dominic Dividner book is a great parallel in parts to the Michael Hollister book. There’s a lot of room for some meta interactions between characters across several different timelines.

The time travel mechanics are not what you see in typical stories where that is the main focus. This isn’t Back to the Future where changing something in the past means that the present you left behind is altered. Rather, you move forward in time from the point you were restarted at. In your old timeline, you’re dead, and it moves on without you.

It’s an interesting take on the multiversal model of time travel, but the real heart of these stories isn’t in moving through time or trying to change events. It’s about the main characters and who they are. What are they trying to accomplish or learn by going back to an earlier point in their lives?

Inmon writes with a real sense of drama that elicits compassion and even gets you choked up at times. You end up loving these characters and feeling it whenever they are faced with tragedy, whenever they fail and end up recycled again and have to start all over, and for the people in the timelines they leave behind.

He doesn’t shy away from some of the grittier things that cause the traumas that may lead to suicide. Which, I’ll say, if suicide is a trigger for anyone I suggest they tread carefully, as it’s a recurring theme in this trilogy.

All said I would highly recommend this collection as well as the second one to anyone who likes time travel fiction where the characters are what matters most.

A good but simple story about the morality involved with changing events

Without spoiling anything, just want to comment that I enjoyed this story very much. At the beginning, we get folks who are obviously antagonistic, but in the end, what is black and white does not seem to be so clear. Time travel is a messy concept that is full of potential paradoxes, and the deeper you go beneath the surface, the more questions pop up. Jones, however, still manages to keep up a good pace without too much exposition about the mechanics of how time travel works in his world. There were a couple of decisions by Joseph that made me go “you are a complete idiot”, but, I guess that’s part of his character. He’s awkward. But, regardless, it’s a good read and I’m looking forward to hearing the next one.

I can’t say enough good things about Nick Jones and the way he puts you right in Joe’s shoes. The sense of inner conflict and ethical qualms he has, and his awkwardness in explaining his abilities, his complicated relationship with Alexia and his now-present family, it gives a nice undercurrent of drama to what is also a brilliant time-travel adventure.

One question I have though; if Joe is British, then why is the narrator using an American accent for his voice? Especially since for everyone else he uses a British accent. It doesn’t take away from how good the narration is, I was just curious as to why that particular choice.

Regardless, this book is, as Vinny would say, “Lovely Jubbly”.

The Narrator Doesn’t Fit

While Peter Giles has a great, distinctive voice, I just don’t think it fits the neo-noir aesthetic as the narrator of the firs four Bosch books did. Giles sounds like the guy who used to do action movie trailers, portraying Bosch in an almost satire of an action-cop character. Sometimes the way he delivers a line changes the tone of the character in a way that just takes me out of the story.

I love the narration, and I love the pacing. The Bosch stories are fantastic. However, this is virtually unlistenable. Compared to the last few entries, the audio level on this is much lower and it’s distorted. It’s impossible to listen to while just using your phone’s audio without headphones. Whomever mixed and mastered this audio… wow. It’s really bad and I can’t wait until it’s over and I can move to the next book.

Katharine does it again with an amazing story set in Deverry. While somewhat lacking in bloody battle scenes, the plot is deep and the intrigue is riveting. It’s very suspenseful. Longtime readers of Deverry novels know how quickly things can come to armed conflict but this story is set at a time when Deverry is in the throes of social and political change and where women are striving to become educated and equal to men in many ways. It’s a beautiful tale and I cannot wait for the next installment in the series!

I’d be remiss if I did not address Ruth Urquhart’s masterful narration. With her reading the words I’m practically right there as it happens.

This was my first foray into fiction audiobooks. This was also a book I've read a dozen times. The narration is excellent, and captures the dialect and accents that Kerr describes in her foreword to each Deverry novel with true storytelling grace. It made me feel like I did when I was a kid, and my mother would read her books to me. I was captivated.

When I completed the book I felt like it had ended too soon. I wanted more, and I am happy that Darkspell is out now! May the whole Deverry Cycle come to this format.
