Historia
It's 1945: When the critically wounded Captain Cooper Ravenal is brought to a private hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side, young Dr. Kate Schuyler is drawn into a complex mystery that connects three generations of women in her family to a single extraordinary room in a Gilded Age mansion. Who is the woman in Captain Ravenel's portrait miniature who looks so much like Kate? And why is she wearing the ruby pendant handed down to Kate by her mother?

Historia
Thirty-three-year-old Abby Stern has made it to a happy place. True, she still has gig jobs instead of a career, and the apartment where she’s lived since college still looks like she’s just moved in. But she’s got good friends, her bike, and her bicycling club in Philadelphia. She’s at peace with her plus-size body—at least, most of the time—and she’s on track to marry Mark Medoff, her childhood sweetheart, a man she met at the weight-loss camp that her perpetually dieting mother forced her to attend.

First Time Reading Aloud?
Revisado: 09-15-23
if I gave a fifth grader this book and asked them to read it aloud, it might be better than the narrator who reads "Abby." There are awkward pauses where maybe the narrator was moving down to the next line. Or maybe doing a very poor William Shatner impersonation the whole time? It's so awful that the usually fun storyline the author always delivers is hard to follow. It's almost a chore to listen to. The only reason it got any stars at all for performance is because the rest of the narration is fine, but seriously... should I consider reading audiobooks as a side hustle?

Everyone is dead. All that remains is an old woman and a gymnasium full of unresponsive bodies. Each day another storm approaches, threatening to destroy the building they call home. Each night a series of nightmares leaves the woman screaming for help. Alone and overwhelmed, will the final member of the human race be thought of as a caretaker or as a monster?

kind of long ..

this was a little repetitive. I liked the premise, but wonder if it couldn't have been crafted into something shorter and more impactful.

Historia
In a riveting debut thriller that has drawn comparisons to masters of the genre like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, Brian Freeman weaves obsession, sex, and revenge into a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and shocking plot twists from the first minute to the last.

it was ok...
Revisado: 01-28-22
I liked the narrator.
The story itself was good. But the sex scenes were "cringy." I get the feeling the author doesn't think highly of women. And not just because the sex scenes are the way they are. The women characters are always described physically - not so the males. And the poor women just seem so... either sexual or unpleasant.
