Historia
It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Reads like a news story
Revisado: 07-18-23
There wasn’t enough character development and so much telling, rather than showing, that it felt too much like a news story. There are interesting ideas but the characters are used to give a little life to the story rather than show and play out the story themselves. I know and usually like this reader, but her tone made it feel even more hard to connect with anything!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Sweet but nothing special
Revisado: 07-11-23
Very sweet story and author writes well but the plot is nothing I’ll likely remember or tell anyone about.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Loved it!
Revisado: 12-26-20
Excellent writing, and I could tell this writer knows science before looking him up, but he writes about science like a poet. What a gift! Great feel for WW2 Europe but without being too much historical and with plenty of fictional character development, a little mystery, almost felt like magical realism but it wasn't, no magic. I loved it! Narrator was very good, too.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Starts slow but gets good after 1/3 or so
Revisado: 12-20-20
Slow at first and didn't love the narrator's older character voice but that's minimal and the story gets very good!

Historia
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a terrifying and occasionally devastating process, preceded by test prep, tutors, all sorts of stratagems, all kinds of rankings, and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say yes and which say no.

Essential for ambitious teens and their parents
Revisado: 10-01-20
While I started my son unschooling with a Waldorf (less academics, less pressure) approach, he's now 13, highly intelligent, skipped a grade because he wanted to, and dreams of Stanford. This book didn't change my mind, I'm in the choir, but I plan to have him listen to it in his sophomore year. Such important information.

Historia
Getting into a top-ranked college has never seemed more impossible, with acceptance rates at some elite universities dipping into the single digits. In Who Gets in and Why, journalist and higher education expert Jeffrey Selingo dispels entrenched notions of how to compete and win at the admissions game and reveals that teenagers and parents have much to gain by broadening their notion of what qualifies as a "good college". Hint: It's not all about the sticker on the car window.

Very helpful!
Revisado: 09-29-20
The information in this book is extremely helpful. I am mom to a highly gifted and very driven son who skipped a grade 2 months into public school (after homeschooling) and suddenly is in high school. I don't dream for him, but he dreams of studying finance at Stanford. Thankfully he knows he can get a great education at other schools, too. I took loads of notes from Who Gets In and will be guiding him (and his expectations) the next few years. Highly recommend! But the stories of amazing applicants who don't get into Emory was a wake-up call! My son will need to find some safety schools he likes!

Decent story, mediocre writing
Revisado: 04-03-20
Lots of contradictions and inconsistencies in the internal logic of the book. A reasonably engaging story that suffered from mediocre writing.
