Historia
Lila Bruce Breedlove never quite felt at home in Wesleyan, Georgia, especially after her father’s untimely demise when she was a child. Both Lila and her brother, Henry, fled north after high school, establishing fulfilling lives of their own. In contrast, their younger sister, Abigail, opted to remain behind to dote on their domineering, larger-than-life mother, Geneva. When their elderly mother dies suddenly and suspiciously in the muscadine arbor behind the family estate, Lila and Henry return to the town that essentially raised them.

Ode to metaphors and similes
Revisado: 01-05-23
This was a reasonable story, but it was so padded by trite metaphors and similes that I struggled to get through it. It will be awhile before I tolerate another such book. It grated on me like a chorus of cicadas.

With many characters, it was a little hard to follow as a listen, but I enjoyed the book. The characters were real and I felt empathy.

Thought There Might Be a Good Story There
Revisado: 08-10-18
I wanted to like this book! I liked many of the characters, but implausible plots continued to be added throughout the book. As in, Joseph repeatedly visiting the restaurant in disguise and not being recognized by the woman with whom he had grown up--would never happen! The long soliloquy conversations, and then the ending--just too unbelievable.

Historia
The Mill on the Floss, first published in 1860, tells the story of Maggie Tulliver and her brother Tom as they grow from children to young adults in the small rural town of St. Ogg's, England. Intelligent and passionate, Maggie yearns to develop her mind and break free of the constraints of her provincial village. Though she loves her brother above anyone else, Tom's rigid, pragmatic personality often conflicts with Maggie's headstrong nature, with increasingly tragic consequences.

I don't recommend .
Revisado: 08-11-16
Story line was good, but I just could not really like the characters. They were supposed to be good, but behaved in a despicable manner. And the ending just sort of chopped off. Too much profanity.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Loved the Visit to Middlemarch

This book depicts the common, but uncommonly interesting, lives of the inhabitants in a small village. From supremely admirable to the absolutely disgusting, the inhabitants lives are lived before us. Enjoyed the book very much. Reading was excellent.

Historia
Set on the French Riviera in the late 1920s, Tender Is the Night is the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dick's harrowing demise. A profound study of the romantic concept of character - lyrical, expansive, and hauntingly evocative.

Narration ruined the Story?
Revisado: 07-08-16
I like books about common life, but the dramatic narration of this book trivialized the story. The story, itself, depicts the descent into debauchery and the resulting consequences...so it is sad.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.
