Historia
At the rock-bottom end of the sport of kings sits the ruthless and often violent world of cheap horse racing, where trainers and jockeys, grooms and hotwalkers, loan sharks and touts are all struggling to take an edge, or prove their luck, or just survive. Equal parts Nathanael West, Damon Runyon and Eudora Welty, Lord of Misrule follows five characters -- scarred and lonely dreamers in the American grain -- through a year and four races at Indian Mound Downs, downriver from Wheeling, West Virginia.

Don’t buy this if you think it’s about horses
Revisado: 11-01-22
I got this because it was on a list of horse books. This is not a horse book. It is a good characterization of the denizens of a low end race track and their sordid lives.

Historia
From the author of The Ghost Ships of Archangel, one of the last unheralded heroic stories of World War II: The U-boat assault off the American coast against the men of the US Merchant Marine who were supplying the European war, and one community’s monumental contribution to that effort. Mathews County, Virginia, is a remote outpost on the Chesapeake Bay with little to offer except unspoiled scenery - but it sent an unusually large concentration of sea captains to fight in World War II.

A different WWII story
Revisado: 11-11-19
This book was recommended to me by a friend who is a WWII 'junkie.' It tells a different part of the war story, focusing on the merchant mariners who came from a tiny community in rural Virginia. The story revolves around the significant toll on merchant ships by German U-boats, many of them sitting right off the mouths of rivers and bays on the East Coast. Many of the men who were torpedoed and spent days or weeks in lifeboats, went back to sea and were torpedoed again. Mathews County is no better off today than it was during WWII. The families in the book still live in Mathews where a large percentage of its residents are now elderly. Thankfully, the significant contribution they made to supplying the war effort, has been preserved by Mr. Giroux.

Historia
At the age of 19, Lara Prior-Palmer discovered a website devoted to "the world's longest, toughest horse race" - an annual competition of endurance and skill that involves dozens of riders racing a series of 25 wild ponies across 1,000 kilometers of Mongolian grassland. On a whim, she decided to enter the race. Riders often spend years preparing to compete in the Mongol Derby, and many fail to finish. Rough Magic captures the extraordinary story of one young woman who forged ahead, against all odds, to become the first female winner of this breathtaking race.

Beautiful, Funny & Ever So Entertaining
Revisado: 05-27-19
I've heard lots of interviews of participants in the Mongol Derby, watched a documentary, and read other accounts of this grueling race. Generally, the theme of everything I've heard/read before focused on the difficulty and misery of this extreme adventure. Lara Prior-Palmer, who, at 19, entered the race on a whim, has a very different description of her experience. She seems an incredibly happy soul, delighted to be 'in the situation' enjoying the challenge of the Mongolian ponies, the food, finding her way and the steppes. She is not put off when others remark on her lack of preparedness, she just enjoys the ponies, who are a challenge for the best of riders, and the scenery. Her dry sense of humor and anthropomorphizing of various inanimate objects (a GPS that shows a rare bit of enthusiasm when she is lost; a bungy cord who finally attains the fame she's been longing for when she uses it to tie herself to her pony one night) had me laughing out loud. She's a wonderful writer! I recommend this book, even if you aren't a horse person, or into extreme adventures. To really get the most of her accomplishment and her description of the race, watch All The Wild Horses before you read the book.

Historia
Hildy Good is a townie. A lifelong resident of a small community on the rocky coast of Boston's North Shore, she knows pretty much everything about everyone. And she's good at lots of things, too. A successful real-estate broker, mother, and grandmother, her days are full. But her nights have become lonely ever since her daughters, convinced their mother was drinking too much, sent her off to rehab. Now she's in recovery—more or less.

Don't waste your money
Revisado: 12-31-14
What disappointed you about Reaching Alpha Horses?
There are no techniques included in this book. If you think you'll find some ideas for dealing with your Alpha Horse here, you'll be completely disappointed.
Has Reaching Alpha Horses turned you off from other books in this genre?
Although this is fairly typical - some horse-help books are good and some are like this - touting the author's accomplishments without helping the reader at all, I hope more people will write reviews so the rest of us can spend our money on books that will actually provide some help.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kathleen Godwin?
The narrator was fine.
What character would you cut from Reaching Alpha Horses?
See answer to first question.
Any additional comments?
This book wasn't helpful - unless you have enough money to send your horse to Halcyon Farms

A Voice Still Missed
Revisado: 11-30-10
The first book I ever listened to was Frank's reading of The Great Gatsby. That was the beginning of more than a quarter of a century of listening to books. Soon after that first book, I began to choose books that were read by Frank and was introduced to many brilliant authors I would not have otherwise picked up. Long commutes, days of yard work and vacations spent doing major projects became times I looked forward to because while doing them, I got to listen to Frank's story telling. I was delighted to find this, but was crying by the end.
