Historia
Two brown girls dream of being dancers - but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: About rhythm and time, about Black bodies and Black music, what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It's a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early 20s, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either. Tracey makes it to the chorus line but struggles with adult life, while her friend leaves the old neighborhood behind, traveling the world as an assistant to a famous singer, Aimee, observing close up how the one percent live.

Lots to unpack about race, culture
Revisado: 09-13-20
Struggled around 3/4. Got meandering there. Good story line, tho, making reader think about race, class, cultural appropriation of artists.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

An important book.
Revisado: 04-27-19
The unfairness of the system is clear from the first chapter. Although often difficult to stomach, this is an important book to bring awareness -- and even activism -- to our current prison culture and judicial system. I'm so grateful Bryan Stevenson does this work and that he took the time to write this book. He is the narrator and it was meaningful to hear this in his voice.
