Historia
Based on their workshops and counseling experience, psychologists Jane B. Burka and Lenora M. Yuen offer a probing, sensitive, and at times humorous look at a problem that affects everyone: students and scientists, secretaries and executives, homemakers and salespeople. Procrastination identifies the reasons we put off tasks - fears of failure, success, control, separation, and attachment - and their roots in our childhood and adult experiences.

Some Good Insights But Boring
Revisado: 02-28-25
I made it about half way through before I simply couldn’t take anymore. This was largely due to the narrator. Her monotone reading plus the textbook like a content was what did me in. Some self-help books are better to experience in print or Kindle so you can flip through to the parts that interest or pertain to your issues. Also, I’m wondering if the book being a 25th “updated” anniversary edition factored in. I feel this book would have benefited from a 2025 edit in length. Shorter and more focused chapters. Ironically, I ended up procrastinating in reading this book for the reasons sited.

Within a few minutes the language (f-bomb) and explicit sex led me to return this trashy novel. There are a lot better choices out there to read.

Mystery Is Set in Bath
Revisado: 07-13-24
The setting, Bath, and the topic, a museum of mystery authors books, is what appealed to me. My preference is for third person storytelling, and this one is in first person so it took a while to get used to. It wasn’t a bad read, it just wasn’t a driving mystery that grabbed you. I could easily put it down then get back to it. Maybe the biggest issue with this novel is that it’s a story about a woman— her insecurities, her romances, her work as a curator, and her daughter….oh, and a murder mystery tacked on. The murder mystery was secondary and many times I wanted to say, “Keep on track! Who cares about your daughter’s diorama, all the tea breaks, and your worthless boyfriend.” I doubt I’ll read the other two books in the series as I’ve had enough of the protagonist.

Revisado: 03-06-24
This majority of the book reads like an advertisement for the big solution in the next chapter. Very little on the physiological aspects of how sugar affects the body and especially the science that drives the food industry. Those who have an actual food addiction would benefit most from this book.

Historia
Ritual is one of the oldest, and certainly most enigmatic, threads in the history of human culture. It presents a profound paradox: people ascribe the utmost importance to their rituals, but few can explain why they are so important. Apparently pointless ceremonies pervade every documented society, from handshakes to hexes, hazings to parades. Before we ever learned to farm, we were gathering in giant stone temples to perform elaborate rites and ceremonies. Dimitris Xygalatas leads us on an enlightening tour through this shadowy realm of human behavior.

Fascinating and Overwhelming
Revisado: 02-21-24
Basically, this book is a collection of studies of rituals around the world and an anthropologist’s review of them. Many were fascsinating, some downright gross. After a while I was so saturated with the ritual/study/review format that I started to skip chunks of the book toward the end. My personal take away was limited. A friend recommended this book and when I asked her about she could barely remember reading it. But she did mention it was fascinating. If you want to view the inter workings of an anthropologist’s mind you’ll like this book. What really kept me listening was the lovely British accent of the narrator.

Historia
Author Yuval Levin explores the roots of the left/right political divide in America by examining the views of the men who best represented each side at its origin: Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine. Striving to forge a new political path in the tumultuous age of the American and French revolutions, these two ideological titans sparred over moral and philosophical questions about the nature of political life and the best approach to social change: radical and swift, or gradual and incremental. The division they articulated continues to shape our political life today.

This book was immensely readable given the topic. To understand how we got to the political reality of the 21st century, we need to look back on the thinking that set the stage. Glad I read it.

Overwritten but delightful
Revisado: 06-03-23
First off, this is a fabulous book to listen to thanks to the wonderful reader who does many accents so well and captures the diverse characters. If you like meandering British novels this is for you. Several times I laughed out loud at Sayer’s dialogue or descriptions.
That said, as far as the murder mystery part of the story, it takes a backseat. Rather a disappointment. If you are new to Peter Wimsey mysterys DO NOT start with this one. I’ve read almost all the other ones and so enjoyed the long-winded and overwritten natural of the book because it was like a visit with the familiar characters.

Excellent Insight of How We Got To Now
Revisado: 05-19-23
The narration by the author is superb. Not a quick listen that’s for sure. I’ll likely relisten to it so I can glean more from his analysis and insights. His explanation is so helpful in understanding this increasingly strange world we find ourselves in today.

Excellent Heyerdahl Novel
Revisado: 07-19-19
Heyer’s characters and her command of dialogue are impeccable. Laughed out loud many times. Her plots take refreshingly unexpected twist that keep one reading. As always, when I finish a Heyer novel, I can’t wait to start the next one. Above all, it’s Regency romance that is clean and entertaining.
