A Refreshing, Honest Tale of a Successful Woman
Revisado: 01-03-22
Katie Couric was an iconic figure on the Today Show that I didn't feel one way or another about- just that she was perfect for that job. Her sunny personality was somehow comforting in the morning, no matter what the news. Then tragedy struck with the death of her husband at such a young age, leaving her with two very young children, and America mourned with her. What drew me to the book was wanting to understand how she coped with her widowhood (and hope for a few gossipy bits) but the whole book was fascinating.
I loved reading about how naturally Katie's upbeat confidence came to her. This is why she was so good on The Today Show, she wasn't faking it! It was refreshing to read about her encouraging, loving family and understand that Katie was Katie from the get-go. She knew what she wanted and "went for it" because she was never made to feel she couldn't. She also had a social side, and it was great to hear of a woman not sacrificing love and companionship for her career. You can have it all and have fun, you just have to understand that you deserve it! Also, that wanting people to like you and accomplishing that successfully can be a great asset to your career, until it isn't...
I came for the tragic back-story and juicy tidbits about other people, but came away with so much more. Katie is very self reflective and way more honest that she needs to be regarding her own flaws. She revealed more about herself than she did about anyone else so it didn't seem she tattled too much. Then there is the inside look at the news industry, the public's obsession with her appearance, her take on world events, so much to keep you reading with interest. Oh, and did I mention that her narration is amazing? You will enjoy this book and not want it to end!

Listen Twice!
Revisado: 07-27-21
I absolutely loved this listen. The actors were all excellent - the performances of Rachel and Ethan were particularly enjoyable. The stories were simple, intertwined, and I took so much from each one. The second listen was just as good as the first if not better because of all the "aha!" moments, noticing tiny threads of connection between characters who did not know each other. I also thought it was interesting how you got to know some characters quite well who were NOT narrators, just through the eyes of the multiple narrators who described their interactions. The whole structure seemed like real life to me. Nobody was precious or on a soap box because of one thing or another - just living their lives as normal people do - being quietly heroic, quietly selfish, quietly different and subtly connected. There is no great effort to prove a point in this book, and that is what makes it so great. You take more from the simplicity of the happenings in the character's lives than you would in any grand statement of "who they are" or "what happened to them". I feel like I actually know the people in these stories, and as in real life, you gain so much from knowing someone well. And then there is the title... I love the title because this book is an unexpected application of that statement. One size does not fit all, and that is very reassuring for all of us.
