Historia
It was a summer of love and a summer of secrets. She has built a good life: a husband who adores her, a daughter she is fiercely proud of, a home with warmth and love at its heart. But things were not always so good, and the truth is that she has done things she can never admit.

Fake British accents ruins experience
Revisado: 09-13-21
Although the narrator here is a good reader, her fake British accents, which are inconsistent even within each character, are terrible. Why not hire an actual English person? I gave up after a while because the accent was do irritating.

Historia
From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Fantastic tale, well told
Revisado: 08-13-20
Highly recommend this extraordinary first-person story by a young whistleblower who couldn’t even get his own famous grandfather to care about fraud and corruption in a medical startup the grandfather had endorsed. The whistleblower himself narrates and is completely credible and engaging. Absolutely loved it.

Historia
In Broken Harbour, a ghost estate outside Dublin - half-built, half-inhabited, half-abandoned - two children and their father are dead. The mother is on her way to intensive care. Scorcher Kennedy is given the case because he is the Murder squad's star detective. At first he and his rookie partner, Richie, think this is a simple one: Pat Spain was a casualty of the recession, so he killed his children, tried to kill his wife Jenny, and finished off with himself.

Superb story, beautifully written, perfectly read
Revisado: 08-12-19
I love Tana French's Dublin Squad series. This story shows a different view of murder detective "Scorcher" Kennedy and delves into his past. I really appreciate the way French shows characters, like Kennedy, as bit players in other books -- Kennedy's generally shown to be a flashy jerk -- but fleshes them out in their own story elsewhere. This was an absolutely gripping read, and Hugh Lee was the ideal choice to portray male and female characters with all sorts of accents and backgrounds. Highly recommended.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Excellent insights into troubled race relations
Revisado: 09-28-17
Beautifully narrated by Bahni Turpin, this book tackles the extremely thorny issue of white American-African American relations from the perspective of a teenaged girl who lives in a tough neighbourhood but attends a mostly white private school. What is it like to experience racism from police officers firsthand? What is it like to lose friends because of racial hatred? What is it like to live in a community with its own deep divisions and violent conflicts, caused by its own gangs? Author Angie Thomas looks at all these problems in this novel, which probably ought to be required reading in American schools. As a Canadian reader, I'm not saying we don't have these issues or divisions in my country, but the proliferation of U.S. news stories about police officers killing young, innocent African Americans suggests that this is a major issue there, and that a warm, human story like this one, told by an endearing young female narrator, is something everybody ought to read. There are insights into African American culture that I'd never had before, and Thomas isn't afraid to confront white people's casually racist comments head-on. This is really well done, and I can't imagine a better narrator than Turpin, who manages to bring each and every character to life.
