Historia
Have you ever found yourself wondering “Why do I want more than I have?” Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis and one of the world’s leading experts on behavior change, shows that the problem isn’t you. The problem is your scarcity mindset, left over from our ancient ancestors. They had to constantly seek and consume to survive because vital survival tools like food, material goods, information, and power were scarce and hard to find. But with our modern ability to easily fulfill our ancient desire for more, our hardwired “scarcity brain” is now backfiring.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 09-21-24
This book accompanied me on walks and I enjoyed most of the chapters. I learned a lot and will likely listen to it again. His explorations into the life of monks was particularly interesting, shifting my thinking about silence and how little interaction we really need - if we have the basic need of knowing someone caring is available to listen to us, it can be enough. So my introversion isn't unhealthy! He was a good narrator, too.

Historia
In the middle of Psalm 43, God offers us a dynamic invitation: Send out your light. Prolific singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken believes we each have the opportunity to hear and answer this invitation. This book is written in three parts: Part one is the becoming, the creation, how God makes us and gives us an identity. Part two is the disorientation of loss, displacement, and the dark night of the soul. Part three is reorientation, how God brings us through the darkness and illuminates our path with Scripture, sending us out to take his light to others.

Powerful
Revisado: 06-27-24
For several weeks, I walked and listened to the author reading her work. What a blessing! It is part memoir and part a history of some of her songs but mostly it is worship. Sandra leads worship on stages in and out of church and she is adept at pointing to God's role in beauty, both in simple things and in tragic circumstances of life. She writes, like the poet she is, synthesizing so many concepts that float around until gathered. I can't really describe how touching her words are, in every chapter, whether presenting clear ideas or bringing up joyful memories of the distant past. Her essays about the value of the church in a world that increasingly doesn't see it, were encouraging. I want a playlist of all the songs she mentions!

Historia
These days, brokenness feels more comfortable to discuss than holiness. It’s easier to say that we are messy than holy, that healing is a long way off. To say that we are holy seems like one step away from holier than thou, and no one ever wants to be that. Listen on your own or with a group, Holiness Here is a rich spiritual formation and discipleship resource that will inspire you to seek out the beauty and wonder of a holy life.

A friendly chat
Revisado: 06-27-24
The author reading her work has been my companion on morning walks this past week or so. What a delight! It is like walking with a spiritual director, who knows and loves God, for a conversation about the beauty of life, our journey together, what holiness looks like on a daily basis - and what it doesn't. All of this leaves me encouraged and inspired, grateful and at peace. I wasn't looking for a "theology of holiness" book. At this stage of life, that's not as important as being reminded of what loving others could look like and feel like in ordinary, joyful and difficult times. This book is a delight and I'm sad it's over - not that I won't listen again in a few years.

Historia
Every day, we find ourselves in gatherings, Priya Parker says in The Art of Gathering. If we can understand what makes these gatherings effective and memorable, then we can reframe and redirect them to benefit everyone, host and guest alike. Parker defines a gathering as three or more people who come together for a specific purpose. When we understand why we gather, she says - to acknowledge, to learn, to challenge, to change - we learn how to organize gatherings that are relevant and memorable.

Wonderfully wise
Revisado: 10-18-23
I loved every chapter in this book for the wisdom shared and the entertainment value of the anecdotes supporting the author's ideas. The narrator was believable as the author, which made the information more credible, like I was at a workshop.
In addition to this changing any future gathering I am responsible for hosting/planning, I was so relieved to hear the reasons for the many poorly hosted gatherings I've experienced (corporate, family, religious, rituals). Sometimes after leaving a gathering, I feel slimed, shamed, disappointed or confused and can't reconcile those feelings with anything in particular that happened or the people who hosted. It wasn't personal...it was some (or many, many) elements of a good gathering being missing. This information has helped me many times in the weeks I've been listening to this book. It also gives me specific things to note and be grateful for in wonderful gatherings. Thank you!

I loved all of this book that explained so many parts of the Bible that remained mysterious despite listening to sermons for over 40 years. I danced with joy several times. Can’t wait to hear his take on Paul’s writings unbound from Western influences!

Historia
Walking with God through Pain and Suffering is the definitive Christian book on why bad things happen and how we should respond to them. The question of why there is pain and suffering in the world has confounded every generation; yet there has not been a major book from a Christian perspective exploring why they exist for many years.

Sustaining peace

Dr. Keller did a good job of presenting a theological view of suffering. Most impactful, however, were stories from actual people. A summary in the prologue is very valuable for future use.

Beautifully Read Devotional
Revisado: 11-06-20
This title is on the top of my playlist most weeks. After I once read it as a devotional, one chapter at a time thoughtfully and prayerfully, the rest of the many times I've listened to Queen EF Phillips is for the joy of being read to sleep. Especially when I awaken from a startling dream or awaken and start thinking of the next day's problems, one or two chapters of her voice and the content assuring me of God's love and His perfect plan, and I'm back asleep. The theology is sound and hearing her read Psalm 119 is a rich blessing. Wish she had more devotionals but this one works perfectly on repeat.

Wonderful Storyteller
Revisado: 01-23-20
Liz Ditty does a beautiful job of narrating her own work. Her voice is calming and non-threatening and she's not dogmatic nor overly-animated as some speakers/authors are. OK, that's out of the way! What she is, is a good storyteller who is able to make a lot of very important, sometimes tiny, points about living a life with an ear to God's voice in a world that isn't even sure God exists. I found in her voice and writing a tender encouragement to keep on moving forward in life with confidence in God who created me, does indeed hear me, and also can be heard.

Entertaining but missing something
Revisado: 08-07-18
The stories about animal behavior are wonderful. And the narrator is fine. The problem I had is that while I would happily repeat the stories to others, I did not feel confident about the science that was presented that explained the behavior. Happy I bought it because of the anecdotes, though.
