I love Clarke's work and was really look forward to this book. Between a drab story, a narrator who mispronounced words, and a poor cast, I very nearly gave up several times. I was sure there would be a strong finish, however, because it was Clarke. I was wrong. I can't urge you enough to avoid this book.

as a fan of the television program I found this reading most enjoyable as it brought New Life to familiar characters. I think anyone familiar with the series will enjoy it very much. for those not familiar with the series this story will be fresh and entertaining.

I am a diehard fan of classic science fiction and enjoyed the first book in this series - although it's a bit dated culturally. I was excited for this follow up...wow was I disappointed. The story is simply...not good. Cultural and character extrapolations based on the ending of the first book are just thrown together with minimal attention to logical progression. Toss in some pretty ghastly tropes (which I won't mention specifically for anyone who wants to listen to the book without spoilers) and you get one of the few books I couldn't finish. For his part, the narrator does a good job. I think this book (as well as the first book in the series) must have been challenging for him as more than half the dialogue is shouting or screaming. Must have been hard to read, certainly hard to listen to. If you want good, classic science fiction cautionary tales, leave this one alone.

It's almost certain that anyone interested in this book already knows the basics of the story - it's part of popular culture. So, setting all that aside, let me just say that Mr. Hill provides an excellent voice for one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time. Some may find the pace slow, but I can't agree. To me, the pace is perfect for the story being told. Like much of Clarke's work, this book is an epic tale of a turning point in human culture and evolution. I think most readers will end the book with a hushed "wow". I have read and listened to it several time, and it always hits me like that.

The first novel, Jewel of the Seven Stars is quite enjoyable for the most part, as is the third, The Laid of the White Worm. The second, The Lady in the Shroud, was a labor to get through. luckily, the reading is quite good.

Although Crichton is best known these days for Jurassic Park, this is (in my opinion) his best novel. A gripping tale of scientific research in a crisis situation. No chase scenes. No gun fights. No tacked on romances. Combine this with a skillful narration and you have a book you'll come back to several times.

I really wanted to listen to this book. Poul Anderson is an outstanding writer and I have never read this one. The concept is one that has always fascinated me and...well...I was EAGER to hit play...

And...almost at once...I was eager to hit "stop"

The narrator seems to be trying to make every word breathy and full of adventure...which is fine when it fits the story...but not EVERYWHERE.

I tried, I really tried, but nope. So, this might be a 5 star story, but until I get the time to sit down and read it myself, I'll never know. I gave it a 3 because, hey, Poul Anderson has to be good for that on his worst days.

Anyone who's a fan of The Shadow, The Green Hornet, The Phantom, or other vintage pulp heroes should enjoy this book, which comprises the first two adventures of the Green Lama. Michael McConnohie reading is spot on with stereotypical gangsters and scheming Nazis hearkening back to the days of old time radio. I look forward to listening to the rest of these exciting stories.

Listeners to Aaron Mahnke's LORE podcast will find much of that material repackaged here, so be aware of that before buying it. There are certainly expanded tales, and additional accounts, so LORE fans like me (who always want more) will find it horribly delightful.

Mahnke's extensive research and captivating narrative style makes this an audio book you never want to pause. You'll keep say "I'll just listen to ONE more story" and, before you know it, an hour will have passed. Sit back, dim the lights, and just let the Lore wash over you.

As soon as I finish listening to this, you can bet I will be picking up the next World Of Lore book.

There are few works in English literature as definitive as Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. They are as captivating today as they were when they were written. Sadly, these classic tales suffer somewhat from the narrative. While Mr. Griffin's voice is pleasant and emotive, his occasional mispronunciations are jarring and tend to break the mood of an otherwise enjoyable book.
