Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Voice could scratch glass
Revisado: 04-08-24
I couldn’t finish. Got 7 chapters in and could not abide the author’s voice, sorry. And when speaking for her mother, it was truly the sound of a witch’s cackle. I read to relax to sleep. Not advisable. Maybe it would be a good book to read, but very unpleasant to listen to.

Westlake at his best
Revisado: 01-05-24
I’ve loved Westlake for years and just re-started the Dortmunder series on Audible. This narration captures the tone far better than the previous books; the mild-to-major snark, with lightly tossed snipes and snides. The regulars’ conversation, probably my favorite feature of any Dortmunder book, is fantastic. Laugh-out-loud moments pepper this book. Highly recommended.

Historia
The Byzantine Fire is much more than a flawless ninety-carat ruby. As a stone it's worth over a million dollars, a value vastly increased by its pure gold band - but its history is what makes it priceless. A ring that has been fought for with sword and pen and passed from nation to nation by all manner of theft and trickery, has finally made its way to the United States. The US agrees to return it to Turkey, but it's about to be stolen twice more.

Entertaining; caveat for dated slurs.
Revisado: 10-27-23
I love Dortmunder stories. Westlake is an all-time favorite. I did find the racial/gay slurs a bit jarring, but I’m old enough to be able to take in in the context of the time and simply overlook, understanding we have come a long way.
Performance was really good. Did find Andy’s voice a bit too high-pitched and Mae’s sounded like she was a man due for an iron lung. When I read these books decades ago, I did not have these impressions. Still, John came through like the character we know him to be.
Now that I prefer audio to reading, I look forward to listening to my favorite books. Not all Dortmunders are done in audio, but enough to keep me amused for a while.

Historia
Amos Decker's life changed forever - twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-01-22
I’ve listened to the King and Maxwell series, Camel Club (my favorite so far), Will Robie series, John Puller. All great. So was expecting to enjoy this as well, with all the great reviews. Not so much.
The storyline was fine, the characters interesting. But how many times did Baldacci think we had to be reminded of Decker’s unusual memory. I lost count after maybe 40 times. We get it. A couple of times would have been sufficient. Sort of reminded me of a student having to reach an assigned word count. Enough already! And I found the unbounded compassion of the FBI agent for the protagonist to stretch credulity.
I do enjoy McClarty’s narration. Sorry to see he was unable to continue in future novels.

Historia
Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Sorry, lost interest

This just got confusing to me with multiple timelines in each story. Maybe if I was reading in print, I would not have gotten lost.
