However, that easy job becomes much more complicated once Nils arrives in Los Angeles, a disorienting place where the sunshine hides dark secrets. Nils quickly suspects that Ebben Mayer’s fiancée was murdered and that Ebben himself may have been the target.

Couldn't get on board with narration.
Revisado: 02-01-23
I really wanted to listen to this 4th book in the series but the narration is too distracting. His voice inflections are unnatural and I can barely hear his Jameson.

Couldn't attach to main character
Revisado: 07-18-22
I really enjoy KL Slater. She is great about including a character that is despicable (along with unexpected plot twists). Unfortunately, in this book that character for me was the main character and it made me a lot less interested in finishing.

Mostly a personal dislike
Revisado: 10-30-21
The story was ok, I just wasn't expecting the villain to be the narrator and didn't like that angle.

A complete crime fiction box set! Homicide detective Thomas Prescott may be retired—but a serial killer, a high-profile murder, an ill-fated cruise, and a chilling small-town crime add more than enough excitement to his hard-earned rest. This collection includes the first four books: Unforeseen, Gray Matter, The Afrikaans, and Show Me.

Funny and unpredictable!
Revisado: 07-25-21
Nick is my new favorite author. I love mysteries but sometimes find listening to them darkens my mood. Nick somehow finds a balance of light-heartedness, suspense, and a thick plot that will make you stop guessing what happens and just enjoy the entertaining ride because you just can't predict an ending. I love Thomas Prescott's character- mostly his sense of humor but also his persistence towards finding the truth. Of this series, Unforeseen was my favorite by far, mostly because it was the one making me laugh out loud the most.

Colorfully written, entertaining, heavy ending
Revisado: 10-24-20
I really enjoyed this book, though it did take a little while to get into it. Rick has quite a talent with the use of unexpected, entertaining adjectives. I had some real belly laughs! There was definitely a deeper theme woven in between the humor. It was a helpful personification of God and His desires and character. I would definitely recommend it.

Historia
Working as a dedicated forensic psychiatrist for many years, Emma is not shocked so easily. Then she is assigned to work with Connie, a wife and mother accused of a despicable crime. Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be. Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. But there is something about Connie that inexorably pulls Emma into her orbit. Too Close is a masterfully written riveting listen about the powerful - yet dangerous - closeness between women.

Emotional ride
Revisado: 04-26-20
I couldn't really sort out my feelings about this book until it was over. It was definitely dark at times, but only as much as it reflects human nature. I definitely got attached to the characters and felt a satisfied closure with the way it ended. The book was witty, and filled with brutal honesty. It was certainly worth the read and the narrator did a great job capturing the emotion of each moment.

A woman disappears on her way to work. A man is convicted of her murder. But this case is different. Though the police believe they have the right man, key components of the prosecution case are missing. There is no body of the victim, no witnesses to the crime, no confession and no physical evidence: no DNA, CCTV or murder weapon.

SO good!
Revisado: 05-04-19
I love what Jodi can do with words. I had no clue this book would be about the holocaust but I feel like I learned so much about that time. Even though this is fictional, I have to think stories like this did happen. Jodi does such a good job of exploring different views of a tender subject all the while connecting you to each character and sub plot. The narrators did a great job here too- those accents can't be easy! GREAT read!!

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 10-24-18
Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors. Her novels are emotional, have depth and a level of detail that make them very realistic, and overall keep me very engaged. That being said, this has been my least favorite book so far. I never got so hooked that I looked forward to when I could get back into it. The flexible timeline was hard to follow, especially in an audio version. It also took a lot longer for me to feel invested in the characters. I appreciate that she took on a very controversial issue, though, and think she did a phenomenal job exploring both angles thoroughly.
