Historia
Emilia arrives in Rome reeling from heartbreak and reckoning with her past. What was supposed to be a romantic trip has, with the sudden end of a relationship, become a solitary one instead. As she wanders, music, art, food, and the beauty of Rome's wide piazzas and narrow streets color Emilia's dreamy, but weighty experience of the city. She considers the many facets of her life, drifting in and out of memory, following her train of thought wherever it leads. While climbing a hill near Trastevere, she meets John, an American expat living a seemingly idyllic life.

I do not do many reviews. I had to here though, when I saw there were none (!). Outstanding writer. Masterful descriptive abilities. Paints scenic pictures and portraits of characters that resonate. Exquisite observations. Dashes of wry humor. The narration was pitch perfect, too. Thoroughly enjoyable listen. Will definitely look for this author's next one.

Kirk defines "the conservative mind" by examining such brilliant men as Edmund Burke, James Fenimore Cooper, Alexis de Tocqueville, John Quincy Adams, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Benjamin Disraeli, Cardinal Newman, George Santayana, and finally, T.S. Eliot. Vigorously written, the book represents conservatism as an ideology born of sound intellectual traditions.

For me, it's finally apparent that this book must be read to be appreciated. I'm sure I'll enjoy the dense run-on sentence structure and complex vocabulary when I can properly peruse it. Audible doesn't cut it for this tome.

Historia
Thoreau's classic account of the solitary life, describing his attempts to simplify his life and sort out his priorities by living alone in a cabin beside Walden Pond for nearly two years, is one of the most influential books ever written. The bible of the environmental movement, Walden vividly portrays Thoreau's reverence for nature, and his understanding of the idea that nature is made up of crucially interrelated parts.

Saw In My Unfinished Library, Couldn't Recall Why
Revisado: 09-17-21
Good book. Surprised to find it in my Unfinished library though. Within a few minutes of listening, I realized what had happened. This narration was intolerable and laughably antithetical to the material. A contemplative, wry journal on awareness is rendered a strident screed by its pace, inflection and tone. Rapid, sharp, and negative. Ironically, like an angry sermon delivered with a pointing finger and a pounding fist from a pulpit. Finally, the narrator's misplaced pauses and incorrect emphases were startling, as though he'd avoided reading the material beforehand. Curious what a different narrator might do for this book.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.
