Highly enjoyable and instructive
Revisado: 03-04-25
I have a complete collection of his books on Audible, and the only one I've struggled to listen to is the one he didn't narrate himself. His work is fantastic, and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Medieval English history. If you're looking for a deeper dive into the subject, I suggest picking up his books. For a lighter take on history, be sure to check out his podcast!

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Not even Simon Vance could save this disaster
Revisado: 09-29-23
I usually do not give up on books, but I quit after chapter 12. The story is not the problem, some of the narrators are, specifically Tim Roth and Alan Cumming. Their characters sounded grotesque and ridiculous, and John Seward (oh, boy!) he sounded like he had a fatal case of chronic Hysteria. Someone should have told Cumming that pronouncing every sentence as if you were calling 'Fire!' is not acting, it's nerve-racking.
I know the two Hollywood actors are supposed to attract more listeners, but the producers would have done better to pay Audio legends such as Vance (my favorite, hands down) better and skip the two Hollywood Titanics.
For e better version, check Dracula narrated by Simon Vance. And no, I am not related to him but I do listen to Audiobooks every day and can make the difference between different readers.

It could have been better
Revisado: 08-08-23
I have read now James Maxwell's work and can say he is a much greater writer than what he offers in this trilogy. The plot was too simplistic for him and the characters do not leave the pages of the book. it feels as they never take on a life of their own. There is a sense of fatigue. The first two series were wonderful. I fell in love with the characters and couldn't stop listening.
Still, I listened to all three books. Where the story was wanting, the amazing Simon Vance would compensate for it with his suave and sophisticated voice and engaging narration.

Historia
Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged. His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.

Horrendous performance
Revisado: 02-27-23
This is an example of how a horrendous performance can destroy an otherwise good book. I struggled for a while to listen to it as the story seems interesting but finally had to give up. It's that bad. Very dissatisfied.

Historia
The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire that stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights.

Please have Dan Jones narrate his book
Revisado: 08-19-22
I love Dan Jones' work and he have read or listened to most of his books. I have read the Plantagenets but no matter how many times I have started listening to it, I just cannot go beyond the first chapters. The narrator monotonous voice is a major obstacle. I become lost in the narration and it comes to a point where I just cannot stand it. Maybe he has narrated other books and done a much better job but this is not the case.

Historia
In the sacred grove of Julius Caesar, something deadly stirs in the undergrowth - a serial killer, who haunted the gardens for years, has claimed another victim - in Lindsey Davis' next historical mystery, The Grove of the Caesars. At the feet of her adoptive father, renowned private informer Marcus Didius Falco, Flavia Albia learned a number of important rules. First and foremost - always keep one's distance from the palace, nothing good comes from that direction. But right behind it - murder is the business of the Vigiles, best to leave them to it.

Great characters and performance
Revisado: 06-08-22
I love the character, the spirited, wild but sensible Flavia Albia. I am not a mystery murder novel type of reader, but love history and historic fiction, and the great characters have made me read all Flavia Albia books so far. There have been a couple of, oh, come on! occasions.
Also, I hope the stick into the performer. Collingwood's male voices are actually believable. She is doing an awesome job.

Thrilled
Revisado: 02-14-22
I am starting the podcast now so I will not be objective at this point. Full marks for intention. There is really very little in English on Bulgaria and her amazing history. No one bothers so I was thrilled to find this podcast.
I will write a more detailed review when I have listened to a few episodes.

Very enjoyable story, awesome narrator
Revisado: 12-17-21
I enjoyed the story, but want to give credit to the narrator. I am addicted to Audible and am an avid listener so I know how disappointing is when a story is spoiled by a bad reader. Steve West was amazing. It was a pleasure listening to this book thanks to him. I am actually looking for other novels read by him right now. So Mr. West, awesome work! Thank you.

Exquisite
Revisado: 06-10-21
This is exquisite, enchanting, and ethereal like it's ghost characters while these were so real and full of life, that I could not put down my audible book until the end.
I was a bit concern about the author reading the story; so many times a book does not go down very smoothly because of a horrible voice and/or reader, but Ms. Choo does an amazing job.
I already purchased her second book and hope for more.
