Beautiful historical fiction
Revisado: 04-27-25
Despite seemingly filled with tropes - nuns! unwilling postulant! miracles! - this was completely different than I was expecting and beautifully written. And what a delightful twist in the end! The narration was excellent, with subtle differences between the narrating characters.

Historia
The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

Kay's books are always so fascinating, close to true history but like a distorted reflection in a pond. A gorgeous reimagining of Moorish Spain and the Reconquista. Very unique.

Suspense kept me guessing
Revisado: 03-17-25
Even knowing how the book has to end, this was so well-written, it doesn't matter. The side mystery and political maneuvers were all engaging, and kept me guessing until the very end who would survive the volcano and who wouldn't. The narration was first-rate, it was easy to keep track of all the various characters.
Perfect ending.

Historia
An epic history of a doomed civilization and a lost empire. The devastating struggle to the death between the Carthaginians and the Romans was one of the defining dramas of the ancient world. In an epic series of land and sea battles, both sides came close to victory before the Carthaginians finally succumbed and their capital city, history, and culture were almost utterly erased.

But instead, he finds himself working alongside Wernher von Braun, launching V2 rockets at London for the Nazis from a bleak seaside town in occupied Holland. As the SS increases its scrutiny of the project, Graf, an engineer more than a soldier, has to muster all of his willpower to toe the party line. Historia
“No one believed I was destined for greatness.” So begins Isabella’s story, in this evocative, vividly imagined novel about one of history’s most famous and controversial queens - the warrior who united a fractured country, the champion of the faith whose reign gave rise to the Inquisition, and the visionary who sent Columbus to discover a new world. Acclaimed author C. W. Gortner envisages the turbulent early years of a woman whose mythic rise to power would go on to transform a monarchy, a nation, and the world.

Excellent narration
Revisado: 04-27-24
The accurate pronunciation of the Castilian names and cities was wonderful, much more authentic than reading from a page. The story was excellent, fast-paced, and only seemed to flounder with the requisite Columbus side plot, which deserved more time, rather then the skimpy treatment. It also felt overly partisan to Isabella, but then, it's a work of fiction, and was great fun to listen to. Always appreciated when the author explains the historical liberties taken!

Historia
On the eve of Marcus Cicero's inauguration as consul of Rome, the grisly death of a boy sends ripples of fear through a city already wracked by civil unrest, crime, and debauchery of every kind. Felled by a hammer, his throat slit and his organs removed, the young slave appears to have been offered as a human sacrifice, forbidden as an abomination in the Roman Republic. For Cicero, the ill forebodings of this hideous murder only increase his frustrations and the dangers he already faces as Rome's leader.

Twists and turns
Revisado: 02-25-24
Even though the majority of the plot is part of history, historical fiction is at it's best with it fills in the hidden details. An excellent novel, with wonderful descriptions, and really, I would listen to a recipe book if Simon Jones mastered it. Wonderful! I can't wait to read the final book in the trilogy
