Good but self-indulgent
Revisado: 04-26-22
Liked the premise and enjoyed the worldbuilding but this could have been 10 hours shorter and not lost any plot. The author indulges in too much character self reflection that turns some passages into a rambling chore. We don't need full paragraphs of internal dialogue every time the slightest thing happens to the main character and it ends up feeling a bit like the author is telling rather than showing us what the characters feel

Somewhat muddled plot with a very dumb protagonist
Revisado: 11-11-21
This series had an interesting premise and was narrated well, and I enjoyed the first couple of books. This one felt a bit less sure of where the story was going, but my biggest gripe, growing through all 3 books, is how stupid the protagonist is. She's constantly surprised that people lie to her, takes forever to put 2 and 2 together so she's always the last one to understand what's going on, and is generally infuriating naive and unwilling to use her powers. for crying out loud, she goes to track down a wizard who's mind-controlling her friend, and decides to take said friend with her with no qualms about being backstabbed or losing the element of surprise. it got steadily more annoying until I was relieved to get to the end of this book.

Historia
On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest. Once, she was the Justice of Toren - a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy. Now, an act of treachery has ripped it all away, leaving her with one fragile human body, unanswered questions, and a burning desire for vengeance.

Original and well-executed
Revisado: 12-03-20
I loved the writing and the narration. I tried this book because I greatly enjoyed Anne Leckie's Raven Tower book, and I wasn't disappointed. the setting is well-imagined and this is another take on a non-human protagonist that is extremely interesting. Highly recommend this audiobook.

Historia
Anasoma, jewel of the Mahruse Empire, has fallen. As Caldan and his companions flee the city, horrors from the time of the Shattering begin to close in. With Miranda's mind broken by forbidden sorcery, Caldan is forced to disobey the most sacrosanct laws of the Protectors if he is to have any chance of healing her. But when one of the emperor's warlocks arrives to take control of him, he begins to suspect his burgeoning powers may be more of a curse than a blessing.

Interesting plot, mediocre execution
Revisado: 11-02-20
I really wanted to enjoy this book because the plot is interesting, even compelling at times. But the author keeps getting in his own way by being overly verbose. so many paragraphs could be half as long and contain the same information, the narration feels like it's holding my hand through everything. Just state something and let me understand what it means instead of having a full minute of internal dialogue dissecting what I've already figured out!
