Historia
In Our Friends from Frolix 8, the world is run by an elite few. And what determines whether one is part of the elite isn’t wealth or privilege, but brains. As children, every citizen of Earth is tested; some are found to be super-smart New Men and some are Unusuals with various psychic powers. The vast majority are Undermen, performing menial jobs in an overpopulated world.

I am life!
Revisado: 11-16-24
This could have been just one more PKD novel, with interesting premise and surprising ending, but somewhere in here Dick inserted a beautiful young girl, and her role in reminding us all of what life is.
This has become one of my favorite PKD novels. I highly recommend it.

God is not dead. He has merely been exiled to an extraterrestrial planet. And it is on this planet that God meets Herb Asher and persuades him to help retake Earth from the demonic Belial. Featuring virtual reality, parallel worlds, and interstellar travel, The Divine Invasion blends philosophy and adventure in a way few authors can achieve.

Dick’s Gnostic epic continues!
Revisado: 09-23-24
Despite being called Valis 2, the story is very different: while Valis regarded Dick’s spiritual experience describe in hospice Exegesis, Divine Invasion is about God infiltrating Earth in the guise of an unborn baby. It deals with very interesting ideas from Christian Gnosticism, while repurposing some of Dick’s short stories. Looking forward to the “conclusion” in the next book!

Monster stories aren’t just meant to entertain. They’re meant to inform, even educate. Above all, they ask us to question our own humanity. Nowhere is this truer than in stories of serial killers. What are the origins of this monstrous archetype? Why are we so fascinated with such gruesome terror? What do they reveal about our fears and anxieties? Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Worth a shot thanks to narrator
Revisado: 08-16-24
Loved the narrator, great voice and conveys intense investment in the story being told. I would have preferred a book more focused on actual serial killers than fictitious ones. Worth the listen!

The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city - intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.

Unpredictable ending!
Revisado: 04-29-24
I understand this book was written in early 1950s, and the space race/atomic mutually assured destruction are the most important aspects in Clark’s mind when he justifies the arrival of the aliens. Interestingly, the aliens Only seem to watch over us like children playing around in a kitchen full of dangerous implements, but when we are finally ready, they truly reveal their intentions. I was greatly surprised by the entire plot within the plot. You may be turned down midway believing this will be just another scifi story from the 50s explaining how we all will have flying cars and work 2 days a week, but it goes way beyond that in the third act. I highly recommend, even though it is a bit dated.

Historia
For more than 40 years, the US government has researched extrasensory perception, using it in attempts to locate hostages, fugitives, secret bases, and downed fighter jets, to divine other nations' secrets, and even to predict future threats to national security. The intelligence agencies and military services involved include CIA, DIA, NSA, DEA, the navy, air force, and army - and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now, for the first time, New York Times best-selling author Annie Jacobsen tells the story of these radical, controversial programs.

Slow pace and not critic enough of psychic scammers
Revisado: 04-10-24
I suggest listening at least at 1.25x if not 1.5x. The author speaks too slowly with a soporific voice. Main issue for me was that the author goes on and on about the multiple clearly dishonest psychics, and only reports on how they were unmasked in the tail end of the book. Multiple times the stories told by the psychics are clearly made up, and author just reports them without any attempt to debunk them. I expected a more skeptical view of the topic, but this could be a book written by Fox Mulder: “I want to believe”.

Historia
It would appear that, after two years of relative slacking, the Hero of Chaos is once again facing an ever-growing workload. Boxxy had been quite fortunate to obtain an exceptionally potent pawn with very little effort, but that was still effort it did not intend to expend. Sensing it might get dragged into things it really doesn't want to bother with, the creature makes haste to depart Velos and its orcs so that it may continue its private preparations for the upcoming Dragon Festival.

Historia
It’s amazing what the lack of immediate threat to one’s life and wellbeing can do for a person’s disposition. High risk, high reward endeavors suddenly seem far less appealing, month-long delays are no longer a cause for concern, and sleeping in every single day of the week becomes an extremely attractive proposition. Indeed, without a pressing need to aggressively expand its power, Boxxy T. Morningwood is finally able to simply sit back, enjoy life, and watch the world both turn and burn.

Historia
One day in 1872, self-taught Assyriologist George Smith was sifting through a pile of clay tablets when he realized he was reading about "a flood, storm, a ship caught on a mountain, and a bird sent out in search of dry land". This is the riveting story of the discovery of the world's first literary epic, the "Epic of Gilgamesh".

Great story, worth sticking until the end
Revisado: 04-10-23
It took me a couple of false starts to get into this book, as the introduction is a little slow, and it is hard to understand where the author is going. Ultimately, the books establishes the context of end of victorian era when the tablets of Gilgamesh’s Epic were found, then goes on to biographies of the very different men responsible for the discovery. The most interesting part, for me, were the tales of Assyria’s fall, and its last great king, as well as the tale of the Epic itself. Thank you for the great stories!

Another great lecture from Professor Rufus
Revisado: 01-14-23
I have listened to multiple lectures from Professor Rufus, and in this one, like the others, he brings his passion and knowledge to present us with the wisdom of the great works of classic and modern literature. You will certainly enjoy it, you will laugh, you will cry, you will cheer, and above all you will become a better person.
