Historia
The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

It’s basically porn, but with a good story
Revisado: 04-26-23
Flawed characters, lots of sex (maybe too much), good action and great narration. This was a great story, if you have the stomach for it!

Dragged on for too long
Revisado: 04-26-23
The 2/3 of this book was very good, with characters that actually did things and made you want to know more. The last third of the book was sex every 20 minutes. And the sex lasted forever. I get it, they have wild sex and their entire relationship is about control, pain, obsession and sex. When they started to make each other bleed, I started to get a little weirded out at that point. I’m not a shy person, but enough with the sex and get to the story line. It just got really old by the end of the book and I was no longer interested in it.
The narrators were excellent, top notch.

Longer than it should have been
Revisado: 11-13-21
I understand that people can be manipulative, but the main character of this book was infuriating at times. Overall, the book was decent, although frustrating, but it kept me entertained. It was on the long side because it was very repetitive.

In this compulsively listenable tale of secrets, lies, and deception, Gilly Macmillan explores the darkest impulses and desires of the human heart. Diabolically clever, The Nanny reminds us that sometimes the truth hurts so much you’d rather hear the lie.

Revisado: 10-08-21
It had a spooky old house feeling and a good back story. I didn’t care for Jo very much because of how naive she was, but it all played out well. The narration was excellent. Recommend!

Darby Thorne is a college student stranded by a blizzard at a highway rest stop in the middle of nowhere. She’s on the way home to see her sick mother. She’ll have to spend the night in the rest stop with four complete strangers. Then she stumbles across a little girl locked inside one of their parked cars. There is no cell phone reception, no telephone, no way out because of the snow, and she doesn’t know which one of the other travelers is the kidnapper.

The Neverending Story
Revisado: 09-02-21
This book was very suspenseful and had a lot of twists to keep me interested for the first 3/4 of the story. However, the last 2 hours were painstakingly tedious, just never ending. As soon as you thought Darby made progress, nope, she didn't. This literally happened like 10 times and by the last 30 minutes, I didn't care who lived or died because it was just so repetitive and annoying. I actually sped up the audio to 1.4x just to get to the point faster.
This could have been a lot better if the author had been a little more concise with the details. There was a lot of fluff written in that was repeated several times. However, that being said, it should have ended long before it actually did. There were so many ups and downs, by the time it ended, I was thoroughly annoyed.

This would be better in print
Revisado: 06-07-21
I love Sarah Jio, but the narrator of this book significantly altered the story and not in a good way. She overacted so often and sounded like a woman in her late 60’s, not mid 30’s. She also sounded very snobby, as if she was portraying a matriarch from high society. Just all wrong for this story. Sadly, it really ruined the story for me. Save yourself a credit and buy the hard copy instead. I bet it would have been more enjoyable and less annoying.

Historia
Magazine journalist McKenna Jordan is chasing the story of an unidentified woman who heroically pulled a teenage boy from the subway tracks. When McKenna locates a video snippet that purportedly captures the incident, McKenna is shocked to discover that the woman in the video bears a strong resemblance to Susan Hauptmann, a close friend who vanished without a trace 10 years earlier. What might have been a short-lived Metro story sends the former-prosecutor-turned-reporter on a twisting search to dark secrets buried dangerously close to home....

Starts slow, but gets better
Revisado: 04-30-21
This took me some time to get into, mainly because the narration was so slow. I ended up increasing it to 1.4X and it was much better. The story was kind of all over the place at first with many side stories and I found my mind to wander often. About halfway through the book, they started to come together and make sense. I loved the strength of the main character, so that was enjoyable. Worth a credit, in my opinion.

Great story, narration didn't match character
Revisado: 04-17-21
I had to listen to this on 1.3x speed. The narrator was much too cheerful and her tone did not match her character at all. It was very distracting to listen to the vibrato in her voice go up and down, as if she was reading to a child. Speeding up the audio helped mask the constant variation in her voice so that I could focus on the story, but it is a shame that this was not noticed when edited. For a woman who just got divorced, she sounded much too cheerful all the time.

Historia
Who you want people to be makes you blind to who they really are. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan — a Berkeley mom with an enviable life — went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cellphone and a solitary hiking boot. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends.

Excellent Story
Revisado: 12-04-20
This was a very good book and I really enjoyed it. My only criticism is of Alice, who spent over half of the book whining and yelling at her husband. That annoyed me quite a bit because she was such an unreasonable control freak at times and I felt it took away from the story.
