Historia
What were the forces that led to one of history's most protracted and legendary periods of conflict? How did they affect the three great civilizations that participated in them? And, ultimately, why did they end and what did they accomplish? In these 36 lectures, you'll look at the "big picture" of the Crusades as an ongoing period of conflict involving Western Christendom (we would now call it Western Europe), the Byzantine Empire, and the Muslim world.

Well-written.

The information is interesting and concise. Text is well-written. This is somewhat overshadowed by the presenter's vocal tics (ah and um at every pause).

Historia
NYPD Detective Alec MacAidan has always been good with weird. After all, his life has been a string of the unexplainable. But when an injured man gives him cryptic clues, then turns to dust in front of him, Alec's view on weird is changed forever. Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last 1,000 years waiting for Alec. He'd been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he didn't expect him to be human, and he certainly didn't expect that shield to be a police badge.

The narrator is very good, the writing is good, but the plot and characters sound like so many others I've ready recently. Just couldn't get into it.

And old friend.
Revisado: 11-13-17
This book is an old friend - Sam Vines and company in the beginning. There's nothing like the troll, Detritis, with his numbers, or Lady Sybill's dragons. I've owned this for years and listen to it every time I need a giggle. Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry

Murder of the Maharajah
Revisado: 05-19-15
What made the experience of listening to The Murder of the Maharajah the most enjoyable?
Probably the best thing about this book is the narrator, Frederick Davidson. He is magnificent as the stuffy, upper class English Resident, Sir Arthur - as proper and pukka sahib as he can be. He also manages the Indian members of the cast with equal precision. His accents and characters are delightful.
What did you like best about this story?
This is a a gem of a mystery from a truly excellent writer. His Inspector Ghote series is hard to find, but well worth reading, and this book features equally colorful, interesting characters. The mystery is good, too. I didn't catch on until quite late in the book.
Which character – as performed by Frederick Davidson – was your favorite?
There are so many favorites here. Porgy, Miss Brattle, the Inspector. The old schoolmaster is an excellent Watson to the Inspector's Holmes.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Although this would be an interesting movie, I don't think it would be a money maker - more psychological than what is popular now. It is along the lines of Christie's Ten Little Indians or Murder on the Orient Express.
Any additional comments?
Truly delightful!

World War II has finally come home to Britain, but it takes more than nightly air raids to rattle intrepid spy and expert code breaker Maggie Hope. Relying on her quick wit and keen instincts, Maggie infiltrates the highest level of Berlin society, gathering information to pass on to London headquarters. But the secrets she unveils will expose a darker, more dangerous side of the war–and of her own past.

A YA Mystery that Isn't... Quite
Revisado: 06-17-13
Would you try another book from Susan Elia MacNeal and/or Susan Duerden?
Probably not.
Has His Majesty's Hope turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. This series just doesn't measure up.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator has a pleasant voice, and does accents well. If she wanted to imitate a German accent, though, she should have researched it a bit better. Her "German" comes across a bit too much like what you'd hear in a cartoon. A little too much V for W and little else that sounds German. Her narration tends to have a sing song quality that could be improved on.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from His Majesty's Hope?
The decision to include a PG sex scene was awkward and didn't fit. This series seems to be aimed at YA, and the sex neither added to the characterization nor moved the plot along.
Any additional comments?
The author has obviously done a lot of research on swing dance and jazz. She includes too much, though. Describing a swing dance would be fine, and in keeping with the book... Including a long list of dance moves was out of place.
The book doesn't seem to be able to decide what audience is wanted. The writing style and characterization is more Young Adult than adult, but the author includes a homosexual character and his affairs as well as an awkward sex scene. Sex can be included in YA if it is handled properly, but this scene comes across as awkward and self conscious.
The characterization and action remind me of the Nancy Drew books I read as a child. I have read three by this author, because I hoped the awkwardness of the first one might have been a fluke. The author writes smooth, easy to read prose, but the characters are rather flat and the plot is very predictable.

Agatha Award-winning author Rhys Bowen’s charming combination of intrigue and romance blended with a touch of humor shines when performed by Audible Hall of Fame narrator Katherine Kellgren, whose deft range and impeccable accent work make it hard to believe this isn’t a multicast performance.

First of a series
Revisado: 03-12-12
Would you consider the audio edition of Her Royal Spyness to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version of this novel, but the audio one is excellent. I have bought stories I liked before and been so put off by the reader that I couldn't finish them. Most women readers can't do a believable male voice, but not only can Kellgren handle upper class British, Cockney and Irish accents, she does a male that sounds male. I'm going to look for her name for future purchases.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot is light and fun. Georgiana is believable and spunky. Belinda is just plain irritating. Darcy is tantalizing.
