Couldn’t Even Finish It
Revisado: 01-28-24
I wanted this to be good. A lot.
It wasn’t.
The material lacks sufficient depth in everything from setting, to story, to characters. I can best describe the story as something a high schooler would narrate as an RPG game. It flits from one scene to another, uses the same terms and lines repeatedly, doesn’t fill in very much detail, and has unlikely situation after unlikely situation. This feels like it was written by a “fan of WW2” rather than anyone with a deep historical knowledge of the period.
To make matters worse, the narration is awful. He comes off as a twenty something narrating a story for local library hour. No depth of emotion, no variation in voice, rhythm, timbre, anything.
You may not agree with my opinion but I’d strongly suggest listening to the sample first because that’s what the whole thing sounds like.
Painful listen, soon to be deleted from my library. That’s one credit I’ll never get back.

Historia
By June 1941, Germany's war machine looked to be unstoppable. The Nazi blitzkrieg had taken Poland, France, and Holland with shocking speed. The Luftwaffe had bombed London, while German U-boats wrought havoc on Allied shipping on the Atlantic. And yet, as James Holland shows at the start of The Allies Strike Back, 1941-1943 - the second volume in his magisterial narrative of World War II in the West - cracks were already appearing in Germany's apparent invincibility.

A Fresh Take On A Familiar Era
Revisado: 02-11-23
James Holland brings a stunning new way of looking at WW2 in this book. I’ve read a lot on WW2, watched a lot of documentaries, but this is an angle I’ve never seen before. Holland looks at the war from the highest level, demonstrating how the economy of war played such a major part of the whole event. Interspersed with this high level view is excellent information about battles in North Africa, the Atlantic, and the Eastern Front. Interspersed with all of this is tremendously personal stories of folks at all levels. In total, this book gave me an entirely new appreciation for an era I’m already fascinated by and I learned A LOT. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WW2.

Excellent performance of a real classic.
Revisado: 06-10-22
This story is one of my favorite mystery tales and Dan Stevens does a wonderful job of it. He quickly goes between the devil-may-care voice and personality of Marston, to the slow and ponderous musings of Justice Wargrave, while nailing the voices and personalities of Ms Brent and Vera Claythorne, and everyone in between. This was a truly enjoyable listen and I shall definitely be coming back to it.
