Not for me!
Revisado: 02-08-23
More explicit sex and a very creepy use of threats of and use of violence by men to manipulate women. I found the male narrator’s choice of voice for the primary female character very off putting. But to top it all off, one finds out in the last few sentences of the book that this is not the whole story- there must be another book to follow up. I haven’t read anything else by this author, and I don’t expect I will.

Not very useful
Revisado: 02-05-23
I don’t know if anyone else could learn any useful French language skills with this audio, but when I first tried it I thought it was useless for me because everything was completely out of context. No idea of tenses or anything. After a year and a half of DuoLingo ( and in the top 99.9% of users based on time I assume rather than proficiency) I can understand the phrases in this audio, but still don’t find it very useful. Better to invest yourself in a real language learning program unfortunately. I also tried the audible Harry Potter books in French, since they have been so helpful to the beginning English readers I know. Unfortunately the reader is unlistenable to my ears. Very dramatic!

Historia
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

A Must Read!
Revisado: 09-10-18
I've known about slavery, read "A People's History of the US", novels, biographies, etc, about the period, but this book is the first that made the horror of American slavery clear in a way that others had not. I found the change of vocabulary from "plantations", which brings up "Gone With The Wind" antebellum imagery, to "slave labor camps" which brings up WWII extermination camps, helped me appreciate the brutality of slavery. New to me was the explaination of how the westward movement of southern agriculture and the efficiency of the cotton gin increased the brutality of slavery. The descriptions were vivid and uncomfortable.
This is not a book that pits the abolishionists of the North against the whole South, instead it calls the entire country to account for the theft of labor (and lives) that in one way or another benefits white people. The case for reparations is much clearer to me now.

Historia
In Sweden there is a kind of decluttering called döstädning, dö meaning "death" and städning meaning "cleaning." This surprising and invigorating process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner rather than later, before others have to do it for you. In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs listeners to embrace minimalism.

Juliette Stevenson Is A Fantastic Narrator!
Revisado: 06-09-18
This book was one of the easiest to listen to and perhaps more realistic decluttering books I’ve read. The narrator makes it a joy, even if the topic isn’t particularly groundbreaking.

Historia
Sixty-six million years ago, an object the size of a city descended from space to crash into Earth, creating a devastating cataclysm that killed off the dinosaurs, along with three-quarters of the other species on the planet. What was its origin? In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Lisa Randall proposes it was a comet that was dislodged from its orbit as the solar system passed through a disk of dark matter embedded in the Milky Way. In a sense it might have been dark matter that killed the dinosaurs.

Sadly, I know nothing more about dark matter or dinosaurs than I did before I started 😕. It may well be my inability to comprehend the material is totally due to slowly encroaching dementia, but this was a waste of time for me. 😯

You went to bed at home, just like every other night. You woke up in the back of a taxi, over 250 miles away. You have no idea how you got there and no memory of the last 10 hours. You have no phone, no money, just a suicide note in your coat pocket, in your own writing. You know you weren't planning to kill yourself. Your family and friends think you are lying. Someone knows exactly what happened to you. But they're not telling....

Couldn't Listen Through
Revisado: 08-26-17
I listened for over four hours of a plodding story of unpleasant people until I finally skipped to the last three chapters. I'm glad I did. It finished the story up, answered questions, had a little bit of drama and got the ordeal over. There is very little humor in this book - just a dragging story with very little action.

Historia
In this paradigm shifting book, Dale Bredesen, MD, offers real hope to anyone looking to prevent and even reverse Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline. Revealing that AD is not one condition, as it is currently treated, but three, The End of Alzheimer's outlines 36 metabolic factors (micronutrients, hormone levels, sleep) that can trigger "downsizing" in the brain. The protocol shows us how to rebalance these factors using lifestyle modifications like taking B12, eliminating gluten, or improving oral hygiene.

Should Have A PDF
Revisado: 08-25-17
I found this book to be pretty technical. Listening to neurochemistry and later having long web addresses read to me was not very useful I listen because I'm doing something else physically- I can't always stop and write something down.
I suppose I was also looking for more of a how-to manual, and many times the book warns us that each situation is different. Maybe that's realistic, maybe they are 'covering their behinds' - but it was a long book with a multitude of suggestions and I'm left quite unsure if I should make any changes. [i already do many of the dietary, sleep, exercise and toxin avoidance strategies suggested.]
The author suggests quite a number of tests and I wouldn't have more than a glimmer of insight into the next steps to take when I had those test results.
I suppose I'm either too far gone in cerebral damage or perhaps the book is written for a different audience- functional physicians, perhaps? It made clear to me that I would need to hire someone with more knowledge than I have to oversee it if I wanted to implement this program.
Maybe having a PDF would have helped . . .

Revisado: 08-14-16
Not the first book I would recommend re: making changes in your diet - I found books by GaryTaubes much more useful and rooted in the research on diet and metabolism. This books recommendations on fats seem outdated, but intermittent fasting has worked well for me.

This is not your typical Zen book. Brad Warner, a young punk who grew up to be a Zen master, spares no one. This bold new approach to the "Why?" of Zen Buddhism is as strongly grounded in the tradition of Zen as it is utterly revolutionary. Warner's voice is hilarious, and he calls on the wisdom of everyone from punk and pop culture icons to the Buddha himself to make sure his points come through loud and clear.

I liked the last few chapters best. The biography was less meaningful to me, though in the context of the book, I can see why it was included.

Accent No Problem
Revisado: 09-30-15
I have to admit that I'm only a few hours into the book, so my review may be updated if the book changes dramatically. So far it is fine. I'm headed to Scotland in a couple of weeks, and I wanted to prepare myself with a few hours listening to the accent and perhaps getting a whiff of Scottish culture thorough an easy listen. I was a bit concerned given the reviews that suggest the accent of the reader is difficult to understand. It seems quite clear to me - try listening to the dialogue of the movie, "Trainspotting" if you want a real challenge! I can't guarantee you'll love the story, but I wouldn't worry about understanding the narration.
